No one gets advance screeners of “Game of Thrones.” No one, that is, except Barack Obama, who’s sitting pretty in his executive residence, possibly binge-watching season six as we speak. To be clear, that no one is literal—not even the cast of the show or top critics have copies of the screeners for the highly, highly, insanely anticipated new season, which drops April 24. But when you’re the POTUS, the rules are different.
Show runners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss spoke to Veronica Belmont, host of the “Sword & Laser” podcast, at season six’s Hollywood premiere about their “major aha moments” in regard to the show’s popularity, Tech Insider reports. “I think, for both of us, finding out the President wanted advanced copies of the episodes was an ‘aha’ moment,” Weiss said in a Facebook Live video. Calling it “very strange,” he confirmed that Obama indeed got his hands on the new season: “Yes. He’s the leader of the free world.” Benioff added, “When the commander-in-chief says, ‘I want to see advanced episodes,’ what are you gonna do?” He has a good point.
People are pretty much freaking out about the long-awaited new episodes, especially as the second teaser was released today. But as Tech Insider says, Obama really is the only one who gets to see the whole season: Liam Cunningham (who plays Davos Seaworth on the show) told Vulture, “POTUS … gets DVD copies before we do. And we’re in it!” Rude. But let’s be real: Wouldn’t you abuse presidential privilege for advance screeners too?
