Any devoted infrequent hair-washer knows that dry shampoo formulas are far from interchangeable. While it was just a few years ago that a trip to the drugstore would turn up only one single classic offering, today’s shelves are lined with choices. Dry shampoo for fine hair, dry shampoo for dark hair, dry shampoo for fending off hair aging (yes, it exists)—whatever your needs may be, there’s a formula for it, if not ten.
But just because it exists doesn’t mean it’s good, or even worth trying. When we find a dry shampoo formula we like, we stick to it, rather than dabbling in others as we would with lipstick or even skin care. A trustworthy dry shampoo is the one thing standing between us and a greasy, lackluster hair day, so it’s not exactly an area where we’re willing to take risks.
With that said, when we do give a new formula a try, it speaks to the strength of the product—and the good things that we’ve heard about it—rather than our desire to shake things up. Testimonials, recommendations, the words “you have to try this dry shampoo”: it was word of mouth that introduced us to amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo. “It smells amazing,” fellow editors said, which piqued our interest given the traditionally ghastly scent of most dry shampoos. “It really makes your hair feel clean,” friends added, a concept far more appealing than the slightly grimy texture many dry shampoos seem to leave behind.
We’re not saying that we don’t trust our friends and contemporaries, but we still approached this dry shampoo with a grain of salt despite the overwhelmingly positive reviews—which is for the better, as we were all the more excited to find that, like all of the most thrilling rumors, these turned out to be true. It smells so good, not too perfume-y and not at all chemical, and the natural rice starch absorbs grease without a trace of chalkiness, leaving hair looking and feeling (!) freshly washed. It’s like a shampoo in a bottle, which we suppose is the intended purpose of all dry shampoos, but few actually fulfill it.
Immediately after using Perk Up, we felt it our duty to evangelize this new gem… only to find that it isn’t new, just new to us. We’re ashamed to admit it, but this is one serious winner that we slept on. Let this be your warning: don’t make the same mistake we did. Flawless, fresh-scented second (or third, or fourth)-day hair awaits you.
