Hair that falls flat as a pancake is enough to ruin a great day, and unfortunately it’s a problem that not even a million hair flips can seem to fix. Luckily, pumping up the volume can be as simple as keeping your shelves stocked with the right products. We asked Honey Artists hairstylist Hikari Tezuka for a breakdown of the necessary tools for combating limp locks and provided our own favorite product suggestions to add to your arsenal. Here’s what you’ll need.

Thickening Spray
“It gives the hair some grip and control without leaving the hair hard,” notes Hikari. “This stuff is actually designed to make it seem like you have more hair. And since limpness can sometimes mimic thinness, you’ll want it handy.”

Our pick: Aveda’s Thickening Tonic ($28). Spray it in damp hair before a blow-dry and you’ll notice a ton of added volume.

Hair Gel
Just don’t use it throughout your entire head. When your hair is damp, Hikari suggests adding gel to your roots before blow-drying. This will build volume and give hair texture, which in turn will help keep your strands from appearing limp.

Our pick: Mark Hill’s Quick Change Texture Polish ($12). This super-affordable buy won’t leave your hair with a glassy finish but will aid in creating texture.

Mousse
This is a product that can help add texture and volume to your hair without weighing it down. Hikari suggests adding mousse to the lengths of your hair before you blow-dry. Remember: gel at the roots and mousse on the ends.

Our pick: R + Co’s Chiffon Styling Mousse ($27). You can use this to build volume when your hair is damp or even as a texturizer on dry hair.

Dry Shampoo

“It’s great for when your hair starts to look greasy,” says Hikari. “Hold the dry shampoo about 6 inches from your head and spray at the roots to get added lift and body.”

Our pick: It’s a 10 Miracle Dry Shampoo & Conditioner ($17), which absorbs oil at the roots but is also made with keratin to strengthen and add shine to hair.

Just keep it away from your roots—Hikari says this could make your hair look greasy or fall flat. Apply it very lightly to the lengths of your hair to revive your strands.

Our pick: Paul Mitchell’s Marula Oil ($40) is hair care gold. It’s super light, smells amazing and gives dry hair a kick of moisture while calming fly-aways and frizz. Rub together 2 to 3 drops in your hands and work through your hair.

The key takeaway? Texture is your friend. “The common thread is that these products add various textures to the hair, which makes it easier to work with and mold,” explains Hikari. Make sure your bathroom shelves are stocked with the above items and never let scraggly strands kill your vibe again.
