Dove Cameron has a new attitude about blonde hair. The singer recently went back to the color after vowing to never do so. The “Boyfriend” artist went brunette in 2020, later sharing that the hair transformation introduced Cameron’s new era to fans, one that was free from suffering. “I genuinely felt like dyeing my hair was a total identity shift for me. I have so much genuine, emotional pain attached to being a blonde,” Cameron told E! At the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards. She echoed similar sentiments to People in 2023, saying she would “fall into a deep, dark depression” if she went back to blonde.

Now, Cameron’s feelings have changed. In a new interview with People, the musician called her past comments “silly” and “camp,” and only a reflection of how she felt at the time. “I think for a long time, I had built up this sort of bastion of self-hatred,” she told People. “I had really picked myself apart, every piece and decided that none of it was worthy. And I didn’t care to do anything about that.” After much reflection, Cameron realized that rejecting her blonde days, along with many other aspects of herself, led to her “denying” who she truly is. Today, she’s reclaiming her blonde hair and her identity through new music. She released a single titled, “Too Much” last month.

Going back to blonde was quite the process for Cameron. In fact, it took 65 hours. She tapped celebrity hairstylist Jacob Rozenberg, who lifted and toned, using all Schwarzkopf Professional products to give Cameron a warm, ashy mane—which is still quite different from her platinum days. “Guys, it’s taken four days of blood, sweat, tears, laughter, and craziness, but we have gotten Dove Cameron blonde,” an exhausted Rozenberg said in an August 2024 TikTok video.
