Has the timeless black manicure disappeared? Over the last few years, we’ve seen the nail industry evolve tremendously, with each day bringing new colors, designs, styles, and shapes. We’ve seen the rise of the American manicure, glazed donut nails, and even designs incorporating beads and texture. Amid this explorative explosion, I feel we’ve forgotten about the classics. When I think about it, I haven’t rocked a black mani in years, instead experimenting with deep, moody colors like espresso and aubergine. It wasn’t until I saw a recent photo of Dakota Johnson that I thought, “Wait, why haven’t I see anyone with black nails.” Before you get riled up, I know plenty of people still love a midnight set. But let’s be real—it doesn’t seem as popular as it used to be. And, if someone is rocking the jet-black look, it features something else like sparkles, shimmer, or the new cat eye effect.

Johnson, meanwhile, unintentionally or intentionally made a case for the mani while on the set of Verity on Wednesday, March 12. Despite her being covered in blood, I was more focused on her nails. Her nails were filed into a square-round shape, which made the black polish feel even cooler. This may be controversial, but black nail polish is as versatile as baby pink. It’s the perfect contrast against bold colors and perfectly complements neutrals. While it’s ideal for fall and winter, it’s undeniably edgy and cool during spring and summer. It’s for the too cool for school kids and the preppy It girls. It gives drama and no nonsense.
So, the next time you’re at the nail salon—or doing a DIY set at home—consider going dark. Black nails might just be the comeback you didn’t see coming.
