Shampoo stays on your scalp and strands for the shortest amount of time, but it can totally make or break your routine. The buildup from products and natural oils isn’t great for our scalp or hair growth journey. Using a shampoo formula that can actually lift away the dirt and debris is equivalent to using a face wash that removes makeup and the day’s grime—it’s essential for hair health (and also for hair growth).

“It is important to maintain the scalp microbiome and not have a chemical buildup on the surface that will starve the healthy bacteria and create an unhealthy situation that could result in a scalp condition or hair loss,” says William Gaunitz, FWTS, certified trichologist. Those with conditions such as psoriasis, dandruff, Seborrheic dermatitis, or male and female pattern hair loss need to pay especially close attention to the quality of their wash, since removing the dead skin cells and inflammatory buildup regularly can actually “decrease inflammation and free movement of sebaceous activity inside the hair follicle.” Gaunitz says not getting a good cleanse in can exacerbate the situation and lead to extended periods of inflammation, resulting in worsening conditions.

Tara Shampoo & Conditioner Can Help With Hair Growth—Here's Why
Tara Rosemary+ Peptides Scalp Prep Shampoo
If you’re struggling to get your scalp super clean, you might be using the wrong shampoo. Enter: the Tara Rosemary+ Peptides Scalp Prep Shampoo, aka one of the best deep-cleaning shampoos.

This shampoo is formulated with lavender and rosemary extracts, which Gaunitz says can reduce bacteria, function, and stimulate blood flow to the scalp. “If you have any negative scalp conditions or hair loss, these essential oil extracts can be powerful at reducing biofilm related to bacteria and function, as well as stimulating circulation.” (In addition to these ingredients, Gaunitz says tea tree oil and grapefruit seed extracts can also help.)

The deep-cleansing shampoo also features peptides, including the Acetyl Tetrapeptide-3, to give tissue regeneration around the hair shaft a boost and also block the production of DHT, aka the hormone that can shrink follicles. Despite its deep-cleaning properties, this shampoo is still super gentle and won’t irritate, either.

This conditioner is designed as the next step in your routine and is formulated with grapeseed oil and olive oil for their ultra-nourishing properties and ability to reduce frizz. It also features panthenol—aka provitamin B5—which can actually repair the scalp and strands, helping to reduce inflammation and split ends.

It’s enriched with hydrolyzed keratin, which penetrates the hair cuticle and fills in the gaps caused by breakage for stronger bonds. This hair serum also features Larix Europaea Wood extract as a key ingredient to protect the hair and the scalp from environmental aggressors that can cause further damage.
