Shampoo stays on your scalp and strands for the shortest amount of time, but it can totally make or break your routine. The buildup from products and natural oils isn’t great for our scalp or hair growth journey. Using a shampoo formula that can actually lift away the dirt and debris is equivalent to using a face wash that removes makeup and the day’s grime—it’s essential for hair health (and also for hair growth).
“It is important to maintain the scalp microbiome and not have a chemical buildup on the surface that will starve the healthy bacteria and create an unhealthy situation that could result in a scalp condition or hair loss,” says William Gaunitz, FWTS, certified trichologist. Those with conditions such as psoriasis, dandruff, Seborrheic dermatitis, or male and female pattern hair loss need to pay especially close attention to the quality of their wash, since removing the dead skin cells and inflammatory buildup regularly can actually “decrease inflammation and free movement of sebaceous activity inside the hair follicle.” Gaunitz says not getting a good cleanse in can exacerbate the situation and lead to extended periods of inflammation, resulting in worsening conditions.
