Blueberry milk nails. Coffee nails. We get it — the food-themed mani trends are getting a little exhausting. That’s why we were so excited to learn about a trending nail color that came about naturally. Out of seemingly nowhere, DND’s Boston University Red became the go-to shade for fall and no one talked about it — until now.
“There’s a new color that everyone’s getting and they’ve been getting,” @maryjanenotkatev2 said on TikTok. “It’s a universally recognized color.” She said when she got DND’s Boston University Red at the nail salon, a server noticed the shade and called it out, as did a girl next to her at another salon. She was shook. Why is everyone getting this same scarlet red?
Red nails are super popular during the fall so it’s not surprising folks are reaching for the shade to replace their summer pastels. But with so many choosing the exact same gel nail color, a natural trend is born.
One swipe through TikTok and you’ll see Boston University Red is a thing. No, you don’t have to go to the college or have anything to do with it. It’s just the name of the shade DND calls “a perfect scarlet red, not too dark, not too bright.”
@dailybeautyinspo @dndgel Boston University Red. This is one of the most popular DND red colors out there. What do you guys think? Do you like it just by itself or do you like it with the white pearl Chrome ? #bostonuniversity #rednails#fallrednails#rednailtheory#rednailinspo#rednailpolish

It reminds me of Essie’s Nailed It! ($7 at Amazon ), another pretty burgundy option if gel nails aren’t your thing.
It’s much darker, but the fever behind Boston University Red reminds me of how obsessed everyone was years ago with OPI’s Lincoln Park After Dark ($11.49 on Amazon ). It still hits, to be honest.
The popularity of Boston University Red coincides with TikTok’s “Red Nail Theory.” The idea is that wearing red nail polish attracts men (hopefully the type of men you want to attract). Women swear they receive more compliments when wearing red nails and even get asked out on dates. We’re not really sure if it works — or if it’s particular to just men — but hey, it’s worth a shot.
