For the Girl Who Has No Need for VS Angel Hair, Ellie Goulding’s Long Bob Is the Clear Winner
A Victoria’s Secret Angels Fashion Show cannot come and go without countless tutorials for achieving the signature VS “look,” which involves not just glowing skin and superior genetics but glamorous, high-maintenance hair. We doubt there’s a woman among us who feels unfavorably toward looking “born this way” radiant, but as for those long, professionally maintained tresses? They’re not necessarily for everyone.
We doubt that a choppy, tousled bob will ever become a Victoria’s Secret standard, but at least we got some a dose of some #hairgoals variety this year thanks to Ellie Goulding, who wore her long bob with just the right amount of fuzzy, disheveled texture. While everyone else was admiring Candice Swanepoel‘s sheer, sparkly bodysuit or Ming Xi‘s ridiculous feathered getup, we couldn’t take our eyes off Ellie’s cool, low-key look. (Probably not the desired response to the show, but hey.)
Unsurprisingly, the man behind the hair was celebrity stylist Harry Josh, who is just about as close to a hair god as they come, but you don’t need his master skills to go all “Single White Female” on Ellie’s hair—in fact, you can even pull it off on second-day hair. Work a dab of a serious texturizing cream, like Davines This Is a Medium Hold Pliable Paste ($28), throughout your hair from root to tip, then wrap the bottom half of each section around a curling wand; you don’t want to create a real curl, just some bend. Josh used his own Harry Josh Pro Tools 2-in-1 Ceramic Marcel Curling Iron ($175) to create the undone wave.
We know that the VS Angels show isn’t intended to be a learning experience, but we got at least one lesson out of it this year: You don’t need flowing mermaid hair to stun on a stage. Or, you know, at a bar or dinner with your friends or whatever.
