Few names are as synonymous with beauty industry success as Madam C.J. Walker. The late entrepreneur’s eponymous hair care line—founded in 1905 and formulated specifically for the needs of African American women—was so wildly successful that Walker became America’s first female self-made millionaire. When news broke that her estate was collaborating with Sundial Brands (the same company behind SheaMoisture) on a new collection for all hair types, we were, for lack of a better description, beside ourselves. Coined Madame C.J. Walker Beauty Culture and exclusive to Sephora, the 25-product range hit shelves shelves earlier this month. It includes a coconut oil-rich shampoo ($24, sephora.com) and a shea butter conditioning mask ($32, sephora.com); a curl-defining milk ($26, sephora.com) and a pre-wash protein treatment ($32, sephora.com). But if you’re wondering what I’m on the brink of stockpiling, it’s this: the Madam C.J. Walker Beauty Culture Brassica Seed & Shea Oils Silkening Blow Out Crème ($26, sephora.com).
Brassica Seed (which, in case you didn’t know, is derived from broccoli) acts as an alternative to silicone, delivering smoothness and shine, while shea oils hydrate the hair and protect it from heat. I tested the product according to its directions, dividing my damp hair in to sections (six, to be exact) and applying a dime-size dollop of the creme to each one from the roots to the ends. I then blow dried using a comb attachment. My coarse, natural hair not only dried in record time, but the end result was supremely sleek. The product didn’t weigh my strands down, and that sleekness came with a subtle, sugary scent that I’d like my hair to smell like for the rest of time.
While I don’t blow dry my hair often, heat protection, a smooth finish, and lightweight styling are essential when I do. Much to my delight, this product delivered all three.
