The red carpet is always a great place to get some major hair inspiration. But this year’s Oscars red carpet proved to be an ahh-mazing place for hair envy. But this year’s hottest trend in the hair world, actually requires looking at the ‘dos as the stars are walking away. Yep, that’s right. We spotted a number of gorgeous Oscars updos, that although lovely from the front, are way better from the back. Scroll on to see what we mean.

This braided updo created by hairstylist Lona Vigi for Olivia Wilde was a braid lovers dream come true. With delicate French braids as well as bolder Dutch braids, this mound of braids culminated with a swirling plaited bun that simply must be admired from the back.

Although we only caught quick views of Daisy Ridley‘s structural ponytail, this look created by Robert Vetica for Olivia Garden mixed modern architectural and classic elements. The result: a clean, twisted, and folded ponytail that deserves a double take.

We’re suckers for simple elegance. Nothing encompasses this more so than Brie Larson‘s half updo that came complete with hair jewelry. Created by hairstylist Mara Roszak, this look featured strands of hair actually woven into the hair comb for a truly ethereal touch.

By now we expect a cool, modern hairstyle from minimalist lover Rooney Mara. The star rocked a super sleek bunned look, which actually was comprised of three tiny knots stacked atop each other in a semi-fauxhawk fashion. This sculptural look might just be our fave to date.

Another known risk taker in the hair world is none other than Diane Kruger. For this year’s Vanity Fair after party, Kruger wore the most involved braid-meets-ponytail we’ve ever seen. With plaits, twists, knots, and a hint of a hair jewel, this look just begs for a back shot.
