The last thing you want your holiday hairstyle to do is date you. Who among us does not have a photo from our youth where our hair looks embarrassingly ’90s? And ironically, we’re most likely to wear those easily-dateable formal hairstyles to events where a million photos will be taken—hello, holiday parties! So to prevent you cringing at your Christmas card in about five years, we rounded up some classic holiday hairstyles that will always look amazing.

Glam Waves
There’s a reason that celebrities are still wearing this look on the red carpet, one that’s been seen on Lauren Bacall and Emma Stone alike. While it definitely feels vintage and like something you’d see in a Marilyn Monroe movie, it can be done in a modern way. You’ll need some heavy duty hairspray to keep it in place, though. Celebrity hairstylist Robert Vetica used Leonor Greyl Structure Naturelle Hairspray ($42, nordstrom.com) to finish off this look on Daisy Ridley.

Braids
And it doesn’t need to be a four-strand or complicated Dutch braid, either. Add in a tiny accent braid at your hairline to messy waves like Emily Blunt. Be sure to tie it off with a clear elastic band instead of a thicker hair tie so it’s concealed and doesn’t distract from your look.

Voluminous Blowouts
So the blowout works for every occasion; nothing is going to change there, as Miranda Kerr demonstrates oh so well. Go for volume at the root with a lightweight mousse or cream that gives lots of body, like Oribe Imperial Blowout Transformative Styling Creme ($68, oribe.com).

Low Ponytails
Create a center part, calm and fly-aways, and tie off your hair into an elegant low ponytail like Zendaya.

Messy Updos
Experts can confirm—the key to getting an updo that’s totally timeless is adding in or embracing natural texture. Try something loose like this low bun that Jessica Alba wore and pull out strands around your face to create that relaxed look.

Hair Accessories
Skip the bow and try something subtly decorative (without being overly holiday) like Elizabeth Banks. A headband is a solid option, but just make sure your hairstyle has some movement or texture. The same goes for barrettes, pins, and ribbons.
