5 Easy DIY Recipes for Homemade Hair Treatments

We’ve learned a thing or two from our original forays into homemade hair treatments: For instance, saturating your strands in olive oil from root to tip does not a successful treatment make. Fortunately, this means that we have some experience in the field, and we know a good DIY recipe when we see one. These five run the gamut from masks to frizz treatments, leaving no hair woe unaddressed.

Hot Oil Treatment
Hot oil treatments aren’t just one of our favorite ways to rejuvenate dull, dry hair—they also bring us straight back to our adolescence. (VO5, anyone?) This DIY take on the treatment, from Meg O. On The Go, uses olive oil, honey, and coconut oil to nourish and improve hair texture sans scary chemical ingredients (or plastic packaging).

Coconut Milk and Honey Mask
If coconut oil is too heavy for your hair, as it can be on fine and other easily weighed-down hair types, it’s high time to give coconut milk a try: It imparts all the same benefits of oil in a lighter, protein-rich format. This recipe from Glory Boon is super simple, requiring just coconut milk and honey for superior moisturizing.

Leave-In Hair Growth Treatment
This daily leave-in treatment from A Fourth Leaf invigorates and nourishes the hair and scalp, which enables not just better hair, but faster-growing hair, too. Peppermint tea encourages better circulation, so hair will grow in thicker and stronger, and you can modify the ingredients to subtly lighten hair, too.

Moisturizing Scalp Scrub
Your scalp may seem like an area of the body that can go without exfoliation, but not so! Regular exfoliation rids the scalp of buildup and dryness that can result in residue and clogged hair follicles, neither of which are a solid route to healthy hair. Natural exfoliators, like the lemon in this recipe from Indian Beauty Spot, work wonderfully to gently cleanse the scalp without irritating.

Anti-Frizz Spray
If you’re a frequent user of anti-frizz products, then you’ll likely know that these products have a tendency to get greasy a little too quickly. Furthermore, they only address frizz as it happens, not prevent it from occurring in the first place. This excellent recipe from Hello Natural incorporates jojoba oil, glycerin, lavender, and aloe, which actually treat dryness as well as targeting frizz.
