How to Give Your Braided Updo Some Instant Volume

When it comes to a daytime braid, we say the looser and messier it is, the better.

This weekend, Adrienne Bailon stepped out with a messy braided updo that packed some serious volume. We love how the extra inch of height in the front takes the look from stuffy to casual. Here are some tips to recreate the look for your next bad hair day—when a simple ponytail just won’t suffice.

Step 1: Start with a deep side part and separate the hair into two sections. Take the larger section, and divide that into two parts.

Step 2: Taking the top half of the divided larger section, French braid over the top of your head, down the hair line. Once you’ve passed the top of your ear, finish with a regular braid, secured with an elastic.

Step 3: Next, take the second half of your larger section—the one right above the ear—and French braid it towards the back of the head. Again, finish with a basic braid and elastic. Tuck the top braid into this second one.

Step 3: Braid the hair on the other side, again finishing with a simple braid and secure with an elastic.

Step 4: Twist both braids into a low chignon in the back of the head.

Step 5: To get that extra volume on top, use a fine-toothed comb to tease the hair up about an inch. If the braid is too secure and you’re having trouble teasing, untuck it a bit for more leverage. Finger brush the braid to rough it up too. Messy is better!
