Slicked back hair is a big trend this season, and considering we saw the look all over the spring runways, too, we have a feeling it’s here to stay. That said, the pomade-heavy hairstyle isn’t always easy to pull off. So we were happy to see Penelope Cruz work a variation on the runway look that’s subtle enough for the real world. The actress went with a deep side part, but instead of using a pomade on both sides, she only slicked back one side. The look is a pulled together alternative to an updo.
Compare this to the more elaborate and definitely bolder versions we saw on the runway.

At the Peter Som Fall 2012 show, the models’ hair was slicked back on both sides of the part with natural waves falling down for a sharp contrast. This look has a sportier vibe, while Penelope’s version was perfect for the red carpet.

At Prada, hair was slicked back without a part, making it more subtle than Peter Som’s. But beware: if you don’t work it just right, your strands may end up looking a little greasy.
We are definitely throwing Penelope’s trick into our beauty arsenals this season. Would you try her version of the slicked back hair trend?
