Our latest discussion in the office has been about Lana Del Rey’s retro look when she was spotted in London on Sunday. Although we absolutely love her voluminous locks and cat eye, we don’t see ourselves being able to pull it off quite like she does. But Blake Lively at the Savages premiere on Monday? Now that is a classic retro look any girl can pull off, even if you don’t have Blake’s picture perfect smile and long gorgeous hair.
Get The Look: A 3-Minute Topknot
We love the cat eye, but heavy eye makeup can come off a little costumey. Instead, try accenting your mouth with a red lip, like Blake, that can work during office hours and when you go out for cocktails in the PM. As for Lana’s larger-than-life volume, not only is it very bold, but also hard to achieve and maintain. Blake went with a subtler version of retro volume that you can recreate in less than 30 minutes (and it’ll last). Here’s how:
Step 1: Prep dry hair with a frizz control serum, such as Garnier Fructis For Frizzy, Dry, Unmanageable Hair Sleek & Shine Moroccan Sleek Oil Treatment ($4.69, Target.com) and heat styling spray, such as Oscar Blandi Pronto Dry Styling Heat Protect Spray ($23, Macys.com). Brush hair throughout to evenly distribute the products on your strands.
Step 2: Create a deep side part. Then, using a 1 ½ inch curling iron, such as Conair CD86SCS Instant Heat 1.5 Inch Curling Iron Straightener ($19.99, Drugstore.com), wrap 1 ½ sections of hair around the barrel and release after 10-15 seconds. Continue around the entire head.
Step 3: Brush the curls out with your fingertips to loosen, but keep the coil shape.
Step 4: Apply a light hold hairspray, such as Phyto Phytolaque Soie Light Hold Hair Spray ($32, Ulta.com), to keep hair in place.
Step 5: Finish the retro Old Hollywood look with long, thick lashes and a bold red lip. We love Givenchy Phenomen’Eyes Waterproof Mascara ($30, Sephora.com) and MAC Ruffian Red ($14.50, Maccosmetics.com).
Are you loving Blake’s Old Hollywood Glam as much as we are?
