Despite being a beauty editor, makeup has never been my strong suit. I only recently perfected my under-eye concealer routine and found the best foundation for my skin—both from MAC Cosmetics. My journey to mastering the beat has been filled with challenges and lessons, one of the most recent being: why doesn’t product last all day? While I’ve found that setting spray (particularly the One/Size On ‘Till Dawn) locks in my coverage, products like blush, gloss, and lipstick tend to disappear within hours—if not minutes. Thankfully, there’s a solution: lip stains.
Lip stains are no new phenomenon. Benefit Cosmetics pioneered the category, having launched the first lip stain in 1976. In the years since, several beauty brands have entered the chat, including Sacheu, REFY, Vieve, and Rhode. But there’s one that stands out from the rest: Wonderskin. The cosmetics company unveiled its version of a longwear lip product in 2020, gained viral popularity in 2022, and saw a major resurgence in 2024 thanks to TikTok—momentum that’s continued into 2025. It’s called the Wonder Blading Lip Stain Masque . Available in 18 shades, it’s formulated without parabens, gluten, or alcohol.
The intense interest in the product comes down to two things: it actually works—and it’s fun to apply. If you haven’t seen the tutorials online, the process starts with what looks like a deep blue or purple lipstick. Edgy, right? You can apply one to four coats, wait 10 to 30 seconds for it to dry, and then wipe it off to reveal the lip color underneath.
I personally hadn’t tried—or even heard of—the stain until I noticed that our story from last year was still performing. I thought, hm, maybe now’s the time to see what the hype is about. I got my hands on a range of shades (plus a few other buzzy items like lip oils!) and tapped a few of my fellow editors and writers to test it with me. Below, you’ll find our honest thoughts.

“To give you the TL;DR version of my review, all this shade did to me (I’m wearing Hush) was intensify my natural lip color. The product applied as easily as lip gloss, but when you wipe the stain off, triple-check you got all of it off by getting really close to a mirror. I found tiny specks around my mouth all throughout the day. Some say their lips feel fine after, but if yours feel dry like mine did, the Laneige lip sleeping mask works as a great after step.” —Kaili JiMei, Social Media Manager

“When I first tried this out, I was pretty confused because I’m not on the lip stain wave. The application process was easy to follow, however. I thought the dark pigment would make a substantial change with my lips, but when I removed the residue, my lips only appeared a tad shade darker. I wouldn’t use this to make a dramatic change with my lip.” —Lea Veloso, Entertainment Editor

“I saw this lip stain go viral on TikTok, but what actually sold me was talking to Nicola Peltz Beckham during an interview, and she told me that’s what she uses, too! So I’ve been applying the shade “Romance” which comes out to be a nice, subtle pink. Like you had a cherry popsicle an hour ago. I’ll then swipe a layer of clear gloss to give it shine and dimension, and I’m good! The stain really does last—probably about 4-5 hours, and I’m talking through breakfast, lunch, and multiple coffees. It doesn’t dry out lips, either.” —Gina Vaynshteyn, Editorial Director

“I’m a lip gloss, oil, and balm girly. I only wear lipstick if it’s red. That said, I do like a little color on my pout. Lately, I’ve been using a light liner and pigmented gloss to do the trick, so I was curious how this color would fare on my skin. While the directions suggest applying 1-2 coats, I went with about 3 or maybe 4—because, like I said previously, I want product to last and stick. I let it dry for the allotted time—perhaps a few seconds longer—before wiping it off. The peel process wasn’t as seamless as I would have liked. I felt like I had to actually scrub and scratch, and there was so much residue still left on my lips. The color, however, was nice and noticeable. I added on a little Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm (the Sweet Mint shade, to be exact, because it’s clear), giving the color a little shine and more balance. I applied this before lunch, and I was surprised that it remained intact after drinking a smoothie and eating snacks. When it was time for my nighttime routine later that evening, I was surprised again to see the color was still there. I think this is great for a night out or when you just need your glam to go the distance. I advise applying more coats than suggested and anticipate it not being an easy peel-off. Besides that, I like this product!” —Robyn Merrett, Style & Beauty Editor

“I have mixed feelings about Wonderskin’s Lip Rehab Serum Oil. On the one hand, the formula both looks and feels good on my lips. While I can feel the product’s hydrating and nourishing properties, and my pout has a nice sheen to it, the oil is quite sticky (my stray hairs keep getting stuck on my lips) and sits on top of my lips instead of absorbing a bit. The product feels more like a gloss than a serum-oil hybrid. And although Wonderskin emphasizes that this tinted formula is very sheer, the shade I tried, Amour (a raspberry red), reads more as a bright pink in the bottle and on my lips. At least on my skin tone, I don’t feel like Amour is a true raspberry red, but that doesn’t mean that’s the same for everyone. It still adds a pretty and subtle wash of color and sheen (I paired the lip oil with rhode’s liner in shade Lunge). I also wasn’t the biggest fan of the lip oil’s applicator. It didn’t distribute the product as smoothly as I had hoped, but then again, it’s a super sheer lip oil, not a high-coverage matte liquid lipstick, so maybe this kind of product doesn’t require that precise of an applicator, and I’m being nit-picky. All in all, I think you can find a better lip serum-oil for $20 or less (I like Merit Beauty’s Shade Slick Gelée), but if you just need a standard tinted lip oil that can get the job done in a pinch, Wonderskin’s Lip Rehab Serum Oil suffices.” —Katie Decker-Jacoby, Commerce Editor
