Kate Mara Confirms the ’90s Are Alive and Well

It may not be so old school after all.

It’s no secret that we have fully revived many of the long-lost trends of the ’90s, constantly rotating berry lips and dark brows in our beauty repertoire, the look is clearly here to stay. Kate Mara cemented that fact last night at the “Fantastic Four” premiere in New York, but what surprised us most about her look was that she embraced lip liner wholeheartedly – and it actually looked good.

Her makeup artist, Coleen Campbell-Olwell, told us that “With Kate’s newly cropped pixie cut and black Valentino dress, we wanted the skin and lips to be the focus.” Aside from the epic contour and gorgeous dusting of green shadow around her eye line, we couldn’t stop staring at her noticeably lined lips. As for the reason she chose lip liner? It creates a look of depth for the lips, if you apply it like Campbell-Olwell. To get the look, she used a deep berry lip color (Make Up For Ever’s Desire, which is actually a blush from the 50 Shades of Grey collection) and applied the shade all over the lips, and then carefully lined them (note: after applying the lip color) with MAC Mahogany lip liner to add that extra dimension.

While we’ve been taught to blend, blend, blend our lip liner for years, we’re pretty into this look. It’s not too severe a la J.Lo at her birthday bash, but just enough of a line that your lips appear a bit more full. Maybe we really were onto something in the ’90s.
