Choosing mascara, like all cosmetics, is subjective. We all are searching for something different – whether it’s length or volume – but when it comes to who really knows their stuff, we always want to talk to the pros to find out their top picks. No shocker here, the pros we reached out to all gave us different answers for their best mascara ever, and with that, pretty much affirmed the fact that there’s a ton of products out there that really work. Here’s a few to look out for.

Edward Cruz, a celebrity makeup artist who preps the faces of Ariana Grande and Rosario Dawson, opts for a designer wand, Givenchy’s Noir Couture 4 in 1 in Black Satin ($32). “I love it because the wand is not traditional at all—it has three spheres in a row which makes the lashes full at the roots and naturally spikey,” notes Cruz. “I’ve been using it on Priyanka Chopra lately. She loves her real lashes to be dramatically accentuated without falsies, and this mascara does the trick.”
It’s all about drugstore buy L’Oreal’s Voluminous Mascara in Carbon Black ($8) for celebrity makeup artist Ermahn Ospina. “VM is a unique high-end formula which gives lashes lots of volume,” notes Ospina. “It has a fabulous thick brush that extends each lash with a very silky finish. Plus, it’s a very affordable price!”
Makeup artist Deanna Melluso, who’s clients have included Olivia Wilde and Ashley Benson, says her go-to is Inimitable Mascara by Chanel ($32). “It has an amazing brush that separates, gives volume, length, curl, and is budge-proof,” she says. “You can also layer on coats without it getting clumpy.”

Mascara So Intense by Sisley Paris ($67) is definitely on the pricey side, but could just be that good, based off of Nicole Walmsley’s glowing review. “It’s fortified with vitamin rich peptides that work to lengthen and thicken your natural lashes,” says the makeup pro who’s worked with Katharine McPhee and Claire Holt. “The unique comb is easy to use and distributes saturated color evenly through all your lashes for maximum volume and definition.
Celebrity makeup artist Fabiola‘s winning pick is Kevyn Aucoin Volume Mascara ($28). “Not only is it a true jet black, but it deposits fibers on your lashes to give them more volume and fullness,” she notes.
When we asked pro makeup artist Troy Surratt about his must-have, he pointed to Surratt Relevee Mascara ($30), a multi-tasking formula that’s part of his self-named collection available at Barney’s. “It gives lashes length and definition,” notes Surratt of the budge-proof product. “It’s skinny brush gets mascara easily into the base of the lashes and gracefully sweeps through the tips, giving lashes uplifting bend and extension.”
