Wavy hair, whether it was left long and loose, cropped at the shoulders, or spilling out of an updo, dominated the celebrity beauty scene this week. If you were at New York for Fashion Week, like Rita Ora and Olivia Wilde, or at the Toronto International Film Festival like Diane Kruger and Dakota Johnson, the look was all about tousled waves.
Most of our beauty MVPs got the memo, but a few went their own way—and looked great while doing it, naturally. All in all, there weren’t many disappointments this week, but these 10 looks stood out above the rest.

Bella Heathcote‘s wavy bob is the perfect length and texture, with a cool matte finish that makes it look totally effortless. The trick is in applying mousse to dry hair and blowdrying with your hands to encourage that mussed-up wave—stylist Benjamin Rodich for Kérastase used the brand’s Mousse Bouffante ($37).

Dakota Johnson has what may very well be our favorite set of fringe in Hollywood, and it looks especially pretty pushed off to the side with a messy updo. It’s also worth mentioning that she’s making black mascara on her lower lashes happen—it makes her eyes look wide-open and doesn’t overwhelm the rest of her makeup.

We’re accustomed to seeing Diane Kruger with buttery blonde hair, so this auburn-leaning shade is a departure from her usual. That said, it looks gorgeous, especially with her green eyes and that shimmery pewter shadow.

Emily Blunt can make just about anything look like a million bucks, and this timeless red lip paired with silvery eyeshadow and a sleek center-parted updo is no different.

Everything about Chloë Grace Moretz‘s look is on point, from her long waves swept over one shoulder to the hint of metallic eyeshadow and sheer brick red lip. The choice in color makes for the perfect segue into fall’s ’90s-inspired beauty trends.

Is this the best Kate Mara‘s pixie cut has looked so far? Perhaps. The deep, gel-slicked side part is super flattering, and we have to hand it to her for giving the under-eye liner trend a try on the red carpet long before most other celebs.

Kristen Stewart is hardly one to shy away from a bold beauty look, and this one definitely isn’t for the faint of heart, but the deep blue smokey eye and rebellious slicked-back hair just works on her.

Girly perfection: Olivia Wilde‘s ridiculously glossy waves, peachy lipstick, and dewy complexion are everything we’ve ever wanted out of fresh, mod-inspired hair and makeup.

Dark blue shadow on top, shimmery green on the bottom, a dark red lip and bleached out hair—it’s a hell of a lot of look, and we don’t know how Rita Ora is pulling it off, but she totally is.

We would be remiss to go without mentioning just how amazing Winona Ryder looked closing out New York Fashion Week at Marc Jacobs—between her shiny hair, low-key makeup, and fair, porcelain skin, she doesn’t look a day older than Lydia Deetz.
