Want to Know How to Wear Black Lipstick? Gigi Hadid Will Show You the Ropes

You're going to want to wear the look this season.

Our failsafe system for identifying beauty trends is to keep a close eye on the girls of the moment. In simpler terms, that means that if Kylie, Kendall, Gigi, and Bella are wearing it, it’s a thing, and our hypothesis has yet to point us in the wrong direction.

By these standards—and, okay, a few others, including runway spottings—we can confirm that black lipstick is about to blow up. Gigi Hadid attended the pre-Balmain show dinner for designer Olivier Rousteing in one of the brand’s signature dresses and an inky black lip, and we’re definitely not the only ones who were immediately love-struck.

Black lipstick is tricky, yes, but Gigi is making the perfect case for how to wear it. The rest of her makeup is minimal, with cleanly groomed brows and a touch of bronzer, her skin is remarkably fresh and dewy, and a pulled-back pony means her hair isn’t distracting. The lip is the look, and the result really works.

We’re also looking to last season’s Giles Deacon show: All of the models wore black lipstick, but some were done up in super glossy, patent leather-like formulas while others had creamy matte finishes. Either way, the rest of the face was all pure, glowing skin and just a bit of highlighting and contouring for dimension.

Complementing such a bold look with otherwise simple, pretty makeup is the right way to go—and we’re pretty glad we figured this out so early in the game, because now we have the rest of fall and winter to wear it to death. A tube of Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipstick in Slayer ($21) is practically calling our names.
