Berry Lips: Here's How to Copy the Lip Color of the Moment

If there’s one lip color that defines fall year after year, it’s berry. Effortlessly flattering and versatile enough to pair with just about any look, it’s no wonder it’s a perennial favorite—or why it’s a favorite right now. The season is in full swing, which means red carpets are all but saturated with dark lipstick, and they’re running the gamut from deep, dark mahogany shades to sheer, easy-to-wear pinkish hues.

These four looks are among our favorites of the recent crop. Fortunately, they’re super-easy to steal for yourself.

It bears repeating that brown-based lip colors are everything right now, so one of the berry-leaning variety really can’t be beat: It kills two fall trends with one stone! This rich shade is dramatic for sure, but worn with glowy skin and a touch of mascara, as on Ashley Benson, it’s an easy way to dress up pretty much any look. Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipstick in Vampire ($21) is an almost perfect color match, but if you want to add a bit of satiny shine over the top, use your ring finger to dab on some balm.

A deep, true berry shade like this one falls just short of the goth-inspired side of things, which puts it at the perfect level of drama for anyone who wants to wear a dark lip that’s not too far out of the average comfort zone. It’s especially striking if you have fair skin and dark hair like Lily Collins: so pretty, so perfect for fall. For a similar look, snag Lancôme Rouge In Love in Cocoa Couture ($29)—it has just the right amount of shine.

Berry lipstick doesn’t necessarily have to be dark and dramatic—in fact, it’s equally suited to softer looks as a universally flattering flash of color. Case in point: Kate Hudson‘s rosy lip color, which has a natural satiny, slightly sheer finish that looks great with an otherwise fresh face. Try applying Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture Glossy Stain in Fuchsia Cubiste ($36) and blotting with your finger for a similar effect.

Sometimes the only way to get the exact lip color you want—nay, need—is by mixing more than one shade to find the perfect in-between. Makeup artist Kelsey Deenihan used both mark. Lipclick Full Color Lipstick in Cha Cha ($11) and mark. Lipclick Matte Full Color Lipstick in Vixen ($11) to create this shiny, reddish berry shade on Sarah Hyland.
