I’m no pro at eye makeup, but I can make a palette work if I need to. Smokey eye? Sure! Cat-eye? I can work it! But the one thing I can never seem to do is make the look last without smears and smudges or slipping entirely off my eyelid. I’m always quick to blame my product, but the real problem isn’t a faulty eyeliner at all—it’s my oily eyelids. Sick of the oil destroying my handiwork, I went to an expert to learn about the right makeup for oily eyelids and a few tips for creating a long-lasting look I’m proud of.
Make sure your lids are completely clean of makeup and skin care.
According to Romy Soleimani, beauty director at large at Beauty.com, the first step is making sure your lids are completely bare of all products, including your daily skin care products. Next, she suggests applying an eye primer like NARS Smudge-Proof Eyeshadow Base ($25, beauty.com) or ByTerry Eye Base Prime to Fix ($46, beauty.com).
Stick to waterproof formulas.
For liner that doesn’t budge, Soleimani suggests sticking to a waterproof product like Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil ($20, sephora.com), rather than a kohl liner, which she says will smudge.
Use a waterproof cream liner as eyeshadow.
Lock down your look by ditching that palette and using a cream liner for shadow instead, explains Soleimani. “With your finger, take a waterproof cream liner and put it on top of your waterproof liner,” she says. “Use a creaseless formula—smudge it to create a smoldering eye.”
Keep your handbag stocked with emergency supplies
Unfortunately, if you have oily eyelids, a touch-up here and there might be required. “For touch-ups use Q-tips with makeup remover like Dot the I Makeup Remover Swabs from Jane Iredale ($11, janeiredale.com) or Almay’s Makeup Remover Sticks ($4, ulta.com),” explains Soleimani. She also notes that blogging sheets or something like the beautyblender’s Blotterazzi ($20, sephora.com) can be used to absorb extra oil.
