Protecting our hair from the rain involves some pretty sneaky maneuvers—we’ve even been known to sport an old-fashioned bonnet in particularly desperate situations. Safeguarding our makeup from the onslaught of water and wind, however, is a whole other issue entirely. It’s all too tempting to just give up on makeup for the day, lest we be subject to mascara runs and significantly less foundation than we left the house with, but sometimes life necessitates that we look a little more presentable. What we need is to arm our faces with a waterproof beauty forcefield, so to speak.

Primer
Be sure to use a good-quality primer before applying your foundation, says Emily Lyons of Femme Fatale Media. In addition to a foundation primer, you’ll also want to use an eyelid primer if you plan on rocking shadow. Don’t feel the need to spring for a shadow primer if you won’t get much use out of it? Concealer on your eyelids, set with a touch of powder, works just as well.

Waterproof Mascara
Waterproof mascara formulas can actually dry out your lashes, so it’s best to avoid them for everyday use and restrict them to those rainy days instead, says makeup artist Jennifer Trotter.

Waterproof Gel Liner
Once waterproof gel liner sets, it just won’t move. “There are formulas at every price point—I like Inglot AMC-77 for a black as night, budge-proof line. Liquid liner is the worst choice, as it tends to run the minute water hits it,” says Trotter.

Safeguard Your Lips
Use lipstick instead of gloss—gloss is too sticky, especially if winds are high, and it tends to run. Tap on lipstick with your finger to infuse stain-like color into your lips that won’t wash off or melt down in the rain, Trotter says.

Invest in Cream Products
Cream foundation, blush, and even shadow, when set with a micro-fine setting powder, will hold up even in the rain, Trotter says. Not all creams are created equally: For best results, look for cream/gel combos with good pigmentation in formulas that aren’t too slippery.

Don’t Touch!
What really ruins your makeup isn’t water alone—it’s the combination of water and pressure from wiping your face. If your face gets wet, whether it’s rain, tears, or sweat, do not wipe, period. Blot off excess water carefully and your makeup (yes, even mascara) should stay perfectly intact!
