Tips to Perfect Fall Bronzer

We are just barely a couple weeks in to the “official” fall season and our hard work of perfecting our sun goddess color has all but disappeared. As our natural tan goes into hibernation, this begs the question: should bronzer, its right hand man, go with it? Lori-Taylor Davis, the Smashbox Lead Global Pro Artist, says quite the opposite. “In the summer, bronzer enhances your color. In the fall it helps to build off of the little glow you have.” Below she offers tips on making the transition.

“When you’re not getting as much sun, the color shouldn’t be as rich. Shimmer will look more artificial so you’re gonna use more of a matte texture.” For a more natural finish, she recommends a simple DIY of mixing a powder or liquid bronzer into your everyday moisturizer, foundation or even body lotion for all-over color. “If you have an old matte bronzer, break into your hands and crush it before blending.”

Application when transitioning will be the same. “Use the number 3 guide—the top of the forehead, the cheeks and then down across the chin. You want to swipe the product anywhere the sun would naturally hit your face.” The difference in the fall is that you want a sheerer finish so the product looks more natural. Davis explains that a liquid formula, such as Perricone MD No Bronzer Bronzer ($35, sephora.com) will give you more of that translucent finish, but a powder formula, like Smashbox Bronze Lights ($29, smashbox.com) is better for on-the-go application.

“Beautiful bronzer gives you that warmth that you don’t have anymore,” says Davis. “But you need to have a light hand with it. When you apply too much it’s almost like choosing a foundation that’s the wrong color. Sheer layers is the best approach.”
