Bold lipstick is one of our beauty go-tos: It brightens up any look instantly and, when worn with the right makeup, makes a statement that speaks for itself. As seen on the red carpet, here’s the best makeup to wear to complement these five bold lip looks.

Poppy Red
Chloë Sevigny has been wearing her signature orange red lip for years, so you can bet she knows how to rock it. Start by evening out your complexion with a light coverage foundation or tinted moisturizer and dust a translucent powder on shine-prone areas. Tight line your upper waterline using a black liner pencil, and use a light stroke of a brown or taupe pencil to define the outer three quarters of the eye. Using an angled brush, apply a small amount of pale pink blush diagonally from the apples of cheeks up toward the top of the ear. Finish off with black mascara and a clear brow gel.

Fuchsia
A fuchsia lip is ultra-flattering on fair complexions like Emma Stone‘s, and it really makes light eyes pop. Use your fingers or a sponge to dab a light layer of a dewy foundation onto well-moisturized skin. Lightly fill in brows and brush them upwards with a spoolie or brow brush, using a colored or clear brow gel for hold. Using a dark gray or black pencil liner, draw a thin line on the upper lid that follows the contour of the eye, blending color as close to the lash line as possible. Use a shadow brush to apply a small amount of a pearly off-white shadow to the outer half of the upper lid. Finish off with mascara concentrated on the outside lashes for a wide-eyed look.

True Red
A rich true red makes for a great nighttime (or, in the case of Emma Watson, Academy Awards) look. The rest of the face should be as minimal as possible—use concealer or a moisturizing foundation only where needed. Apply a matte medium gray eyeshadow to the upper lid, blending well to create a shadowy effect. With a black liquid liner, draw a thin line across the upper lid as close to the lash line as possible. Blend a dab of a peachy pink cream blush into the apples of cheeks and upward to define the cheekbone. Finish off with a clear brow gel and plenty of black mascara.

Bright Berry
For medium skin tones like Camilla Alves‘s, a bright pink-purple is gorgeous and surprisingly wearable. Start with a natural matte face, cover any redness or blemishes with concealer, and finish with a translucent powder. Use a black gel liner and a small liner brush to define the eyes, wiggling the color into the lash line and extending the line outward into a wing. Start from the inside on the lower lid, dragging the brush into the waterline for a soft, smudged look, then continue outward to connect the upper and lower lines. Use brow powder or a pencil to fill in, then brush upward with a gel. Swirl a touch of a berry or plum powder blush into the apples of cheeks, and finish with black mascara.

Glossy Purple
On fair skin like Ginnifer Goodwin‘s, a cool purple lip makes a statement on its own. Paired with dramatic winged eyeliner, it’s edgy without being overwhelming or over the top. Perfect skin with a dewy foundation using a damp brush or sponge. With a black liquid liner, start at the inside corner, following the contour of the eye with an up-and-out technique and winging the liner out horizontally. Leave the lower lid completely bare—that’s the trick to making this bold look wearable. Dab a tiny bit of highlighter or a pale, pearly shadow into the inner corners to keep eyes looking bright. Blend a rosy neutral cream blush into the apples of cheeks and finish off with mascara.
