Learn Kate Hudson’s Smoky Eye Trick

Kate Hudson makes our beauty all-stars list for one simple reason: The actress, who’s also the face of Almay, manages to pull off statement looks without ever looking like she’s wearing tons of makeup.
Last night at the premiere of the HBO film Clear History, Kate complemented her edgy Balmain dress with a smoky eye makeup look, courtesy of makeup artist Melanie Inglessis. “It always starts with the dress. The dress for tonight is short, structured and textured, and I wanted the makeup to reflect that and emphasize Kate’s eyes,” says Inglessis. “I wanted to give her a rock and roll meets feminine look to reflect both the dress and Kate’s feminine and strong personality.”
The key to Kate’s look? Keeping it simple. “With a bold, smoky eye everything else has to be simple, so I wanted her face to look fresh and dewy with beautiful sun kissed cheekbones,” Inglessis explains.
The makeup artist used three different textures to smoke out Hudson’s green eyes: pencil liner, primer and powder eye shadow. And since all three products were Almay, they’re all under $10: Almay Intense i-Color Defining Liner in Mocha for Green Eyes ($7.99), Almay Intense i-Color Liquid Shadow + Color Primer in Amethyst for Brown Eyes ($7.99), and Almay Intense i-Color Smoky-i Kit for Green Eyes ($7.99). Inglessis says she “built a deep smoky look by continuously blending the eyeliner, primer and shadow.” Simple enough, no?
