No matter how much sleep I get and how well I gua sha before bed, my face is prone to puffiness, and I almost always wake up with swelling around my eyes and cheeks. So, when I saw that Therabody makes a device specifically for depuffing the skin, I had to try it.

To my surprise, the TheraFace Depuffing Wand (which just launched in a gorgeous indigo color) doesn’t just work over time to reduce the look of puffiness and swollen under-eye bags—it works instantly, thanks to its built-in hot and cold therapy. And, right now, it’s on sale for $129 at various retailers, including Therabody, Nordstrom, Amazon , Best Buy, and Bloomingdale’s, making it the best time to splurge on this skincare tech.

The TheraFace Depuffing Wand is a petite facial device designed for on-the-go treatments with a built-in massage head that contours the complexion as you glide it in massaging motions, similar to that of a gua sha tool. And, while I am pretty certain it would support lymphatic drainage and reduce puffiness without the built-in hot and cold technology, that built-in tech is really what makes this product stand out from others.

When you turn on the heat setting, the device’s massage head warms up to 95° to 108° Fahrenheit (depending on the setting) and glides across the skin to promote lymphatic drainage and increase blood circulation, which helps the skin better absorb skincare products and can result in more naturally glowing skin overtime.

The cold setting can also support lymphatic drainage, and, beyond that, the cooling temperatures (which range from 50° to 57° Fahrenheit) can reduce swelling to depuff the skin, similar to applying cold spoons on puffy under-eye bags, only it’s way more effective and efficient.

After just one use, I noticed a difference in my skin’s clarity and overall less-puffy appearance. And, with regular use, I found it easier to maintain a glowing complexion that isn’t as prone to swelling after sleep.

The Final Verdict

The TheraFace Depuffing Wand is a tool everyone prone to puffy skin needs in their arsenal. My eye area is usually very puffy when I wake up, especially during allergy season, and the wand makes it so easy to drain excess fluid and depuff. Plus, the cooling sensation feels so good on my swollen skin. After just one use, I noticed instant results (as pictured above), including reduced puffiness and glowing skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes facial puffiness in the morning?

Waking up to a puffy face is fairly common and can be caused by several factors. “Facial puffiness is often caused by fluid retention, which can happen due to lack of sleep, a high-sodium diet, allergies, hormone fluctuations, alcohol consumption, or your sleeping position,” says Dr. Asmi Berry, a board-certified dermatologist in Los Angeles. “Lymphatic stagnation—when fluid isn’t properly drained—can also lead to that puffy, tired look, especially around the eyes and cheeks.”

Does TheraFace reduce puffiness?

To say the TheraFace Depuffing Wand reduces puffiness is an understatement. After incorporating it into my routine for several weeks, I noticed a significant reduction in puffiness, even after the first use. The act of massaging your skin with a device like this (or another massage tool such as a gua sha) can help activate lymphatic drainage and support better blood flow. But when you add cooling and heating technology into the mix, it totally ups the ante.

How does hot and cold therapy work on skin?

While the massaging nature of the TheraFace Depuffing Wand can help reduce puffiness on its own, the device’s hot and cold therapy is why it’s so effective at depuffing, boosting skin elasticity, and promoting an inner glow (thanks to better blood flow).

“Cooling devices work by constricting blood vessels, which reduces blood flow and therefore tightens the skin while reducing inflammation,” says Dr. Dendy Engelman, a board-certified dermatologist. “Some cooling devices also support lymphatic drainage, aiding in the removal of excess fluid from the tissues to further reduce puffiness.”

Heat can also help reduce the look of puffiness through circulation support. “The Theraface Depuffing Wand uses heat therapy to stimulate circulation and encourage lymphatic drainage to reduce puffiness and prep the skin for maximum product absorption,” Dr. Engelman adds. Having better product absorption is also key and can ensure the formulas you add to your regimen have the best shot at working their magic.
