By now, with heavy thanks to the World Wide Web and the overabundance of coffee table books you can pick up in stores like Anthropologie, you probably know how to dress, take care of your skin, apply makeup, (and more) just like the French. There are even stories published on how to parent like the French. But really. There’s no doubt that the world is intrigued by what appears to be effortless style.
One luxury (and totally essential) beauty category that France has undeniably conquered? Fragrance. The phrase Chanel No. 5 is basically synonymous with the word perfume, often popping up in celebrities’ and influencers’ must-haves lists and being dubbed their signature scent. Obviously, Chanel No. 5 isn’t the only French perfume that exists and is embodying the atmosphere around you.

We were just introduced to a new French fragrance, and it revives our appreciation for floral-based fragrances, a category that can get muted with powdery, dated, and heavy scents that you might not want to last all day.
It’s name is Grisette, and it comes by the way of French fragrance house, Lubin, which was founded in 1798. The founder, Pierre François Lubin, created scents that were reportedly favored among the Imperial Court, among other royals and historical figures. According to the Wall Street Journal, Marie Antoinette’s daughter actually made him her family’s royal perfumer. Basically, if history keeps you on the seat of your chair, this perfume house is something you’ll want to read about, and with the release of their newest perfume, spray all over.
While it does have some sort of historical background, it’s a little more modern than the days of Versaille. Named Grisette, after the young, “fresh-faced,” and reportedly “flirtatious” women working in sewing workshops in the 19th Century, this floral scent was made to embody the Grisette’s playful, young, feminine, and romantic vibe. According to the brand, their grey uniforms gave them their name.
Besides the historical vibe, what drew us into this perfume is its floral-based notes that won’t heavily embody your entire being all day long, making you feel stuffy or just, well, a bit too vintage. It’s rose-based, but not so in a way where someone is going to tell you’re coming from a mile away. Roses are pretty strong in that way.

It also includes notes of bergamot and grapefruit, musk, and amber, and Madagascan vanilla absolute to give it a light, fresh, and a little bit of an alluring scent. It’s the floral scent for people still warming up to the idea of wearing something that smells like a bouquet of blooms—or maybe someone who just wants to showcase their history buff side like, all day long.
