The Evangelism of SPF Eye Cream: Why You Absolutely Need It

Don't leave home without it. No, but seriously.

The under-eyes are the inner-thigh area of the face—everyone has ’em, everyone has a problem with ’em, everyone looks at ’em in the mirror and groans. But the key difference is that, while you can’t choose to just target your inner thighs, you can totally spot-treat your under-eyes. Score.

Eye cream is a vexing subject that begs several questions, namely the question of whether or not you really need it as a separate entity beyond your regular serums and moisturizers and oils and what have you. I’m not a dermatologist, but I’ve personally always been skeptical of the “need” for eye cream. If you have particular concerns, like significant puffiness or deep wrinkles, then, yes, perhaps you will want to use an eye cream.

The truly devastating news is that, while eye creams can certainly lessen the appearance of such issues, there’s no formula in this world that will smooth your fine lines into nothingness (for that, fortunately, we have Botox). As with most things, prevention is key, and there is only one way to prevent your avoidable future woes in the first place, and that is with SPF eye cream. So boring, so one-more-step-in-your-skin-care-routine annoying, and so very necessary.

MORE: Why You Can’t Just Rely on Your Makeup for Sun Protection

The skin under your eyes is the thinnest and most delicate on your body. It is fragile, like Drake’s feelings, and you need to protect it. We already know that sun exposure is the cause of most problems in life, such as skin cancer and premature signs of aging, and it’s especially problematic for that sensitive area. The sun! Can’t live with it, can’t live without it.

Bizarrely (to me, at least), there’s a surprising dearth in the market of eye creams containing SPF. I am concerned about this and suspect some kind of conspiracy with the intention of boosting sales of eye creams that promise to repair the damage done. Who knows? What I do know is that not using SPF eye cream is a terrible, terrible oversight any way you spin it.

And so, here are eight choices that aim to alleviate aging under-eyes before it even happens. Yes, they’re especially important in the summer, but it’s best to wear them year-round being that the sun is still out and all. If you’re concerned about the inevitable sting of getting sunscreen in your eyes, I don’t blame you, but here is my best tip for preventing that: Don’t get it in your eyes. Other than that, you’ve got nothing more to worry about, so get out there and enjoy your newly protected eye area, if that’s something you might want to do.
