Up until a few years ago, my skin care routine was the definition of minimal. I’d splash my face with water, a bit of cleanser, and finish off with some moisturizer…maybe. Exfoliation? Yeah, that wasn’t going to happen. I was petrified that my face would be left dry, stripped of its moisture, and flaky like a bad sunburn.
Now? Things have changed, and I know that I was afraid of the Exfoliation Worst Case Scenario—something that may happen if you’re sloughing off skin too often, using harsh products, and not following up with moisturizer. But after learning how to exfoliate properly and incorporating it into my skincare routine, I noticed that my skin is way smoother, less dull (a sad winter struggle of mine), and I break out far less in my T-zone.
So when Simple’s Smoothing Facial Scrub ($6, target.com) landed on my desk, I was obviously going to give it a shot. I love an amazing drugstore buy and have become pretty meticulous about my skin regimen, so I was hoping this would be a win.
It lived on my shower shelf for a while before I was brave enough to switch up my regimen, but when I popped open that cap, I was pleasantly surprised. The formula has a light grit to it, but it isn’t thick and harsh. It’s also infused with purified water to reduce irritation, as well as vitamin E. Bonus, it doesn’t contain the polyethylene beads or microbeads that are bad for the environment, but an ingredient called silica instead.
I gently massage the scrub on my skin in circular motions and then quickly washed it off. After I got out of the shower, I noticed my skin felt fresh, smooth and almost “alive” but definitely not taunt or dry, and I always follow up with a moisturizer.
I keep my exfoliating down to a minimum—because old habits die hard, and I hate, hate, hate dealing with dry skin—but I look forward to popping this cap open once or twice a week. I’d call that a major drugstore win.
