The Best DIY Face Mask Ever

When it comes to my skincare, I come down pretty heavily on the “do not DIY” side. I spend enough time cooking for myself; I don’t also want to hand-make my cleanser. I’m of the opinion that cosmetic chemists know a lot more about ingredients that are good (and safe) for my skin than I do, so I’ll let them handle the formulation.

That said, there’s a DIY face mask that I’ve made since I was a teenager and I absolutely LOVE it. It doesn’t smell bad, sting, or accidentally turn my face peculiar colors: it just soothes my skin, leaving it feeling hydrated and lovely. Plus, it tastes nice. And really, is there anything else you could possibly want from a mask?

Here’s how you make The Best DIY Face Mask Ever.

You will need:

1 medium banana. Bananas have lots of potassium (good for hydration) and vitamins A and C (good for eliminating hyperpigmentation and calming redness).
1/4 – 1/2 cup of plain yogurt. This contains lots of lactic acid (a natural exfoliant) and probiotics.
2 tablespoons honey. Since honey has anti-bacterial properties, it’s great for fighting acne.

To make:

Smash up the banana as smooth as you can get it, then add the yogurt a little at a time until you’re happy with the consistency (I like my mask a little thicker, but this varies). Stir in the honey. You can put this in the fridge for half an hour if you’d like your mask to be a little cooler—this is especially good in summer.

Apply the mask all over your face and let it sit for 20-25 minutes. I know; that seems like a long time. Watch an episode of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt to keep your mind off the clock. Then rinse your skin, pat dry, and enjoy your radiant complexion. Use weekly as a special, spa-like treat for your face!
