Tousled, “Natural” Waves Are the Perfect Countermeasure Against Overdone Hollywood Hair

Times have changed.

Tousled, pseudo-naturally textured hair has transcended trend status as the go-to look for effortlessly stylish women everywhere, but on the red carpet, it’s historically taken a backseat to polished updos and voluminous waves—you know, the prototypical “red carpet” hairstyles.

But if we learned one thing from last night’s Golden Globes hair and makeup, it’s that loose, laid-back waves are the perfect modern antidote to glamorous, seemingly slaved-over Hollywood hair. Julianne Moore, Uzo Aduba, Emilia Clarke, Olivia Wilde, Kate Hudson, and the newly engaged Rosie Huntington-Whiteley all got in on the undone look … and they all looked just a little bit cooler than everyone else on the red carpet. Coincidence? We think not.

Obviously, one of the best things about the tousled effect is that it’s super easy to score at home with just a few products and minimal curling-iron skills. Try wrapping hair loosely around a 1-1/4-inch curling iron before spritzing on L’Oreal Paris Advanced Hairstyle TXT IT Tousle Waves Spray ($5.29), which stylist Mara Roszak used on Olivia Wilde. Meanwhile, Emilia Clarke got the John Frieda Beach Blonde Sea Waves Salt Spray ($9.99) treatment courtesy of Alex Polillo. A few well-placed waves, some texturizing spray, and you’re good to go.
