Is it worth it? Meghan Markle‘s new series is debuting on Netflix, but there might be trouble in paradise with the streaming giant.
Meghan Markle is releasing her latest series With Love, Meghan which features a changeup in lifestyle programming. Her celeb friends like Roy Choi, Mindy Kaling, Alice Waters will share personal tips and tricks, embracing playfulness over perfection and highlights how easy it can be to create beauty. This is the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s fifth project with Netflix.
Before signing with Netflix, they also had discussions with Apple, Disney and NBCUniversal, according to The New York Times. So how much did they get from the deal when they finalized it?
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry signed a $100 million deal with Netflix in 2020. The couple has released four projects through Archewell Productions: Harry & Meghan, Heart of Invictus, Polo, Live to Lead. With Love, Meghan is their fifth project.
The deal features projects that Meghan and Harry care about and highlight issues that are relevant to their nonprofit, Archewell. “Our lives, both independent of each other, and as a couple have allowed us to understand the power of the human spirit: of courage, resilience, and the need for connection,” the couple said in a statement at the time.
“Through our work with diverse communities and their environments, to shining a light on people and causes around the world, our focus will be on creating content that informs but also gives hope. As new parents, making inspirational family programming is also important to us, as is powerful storytelling through a truthful and relatable lens. We are pleased to work with Ted [Sarandos] and the team at Netflix whose unprecedented reach will help us share impactful content that unlocks action.”
Despite the big money in the deal, there have been reports of struggle with the Sussexes. When Polo debuted, it didn’t get as popular as they’d hope. A source noted to In Touch Weekly that they were “frustrated that Polo didn’t generate much enthusiasm,” an insider exclusively tells In Touch, adding that the couple put so much into the doc, especially Harry. “This was his pet project. He’s passionate about the subject and is disappointed others failed to see its significance.”
Meghan’s animated children’s show Pearl was subsequently canceled. “Fact is, Harry and Meghan were paid an exorbitant amount of money by Netflix and have little to show for it,” says the insider. “Whether they admit it or not, the pressure is on for the Sussexes to deliver a hit.”
