Amy Schumer has been very open about her health in the past couple of years. The comedian has been criticized about her body ever since the start of her career, and she explained why her body changed so much even in the past five years.
Amy Schumer hit back at the haters in an Instagram post about the premiere of her Hulu show Life & Beth in 2024. She wrote in the caption, “Thank you so much for everyone’s input about my face! I’ve enjoyed feedback and deliberation about my appearance as all women do for almost 20 years. And you’re right it is puffier than normal right now.”
She continued, “I also believe a woman doesn’t need any excuse for her physical appearance and owes no explanation. But I wanted to take the opportunity to advocate for self love and acceptance of the skin you’re in. Like every other woman/person some days I feel confident and good as hell and others I want to put a bag over my head.”
She addressed the change in her new Netflix movie Kinda Pregnant. A maternity store employee asks her character (who’s pretending to be pregnant) if she’s five months along because of her bloating. “I’ll break your f—king neck,” Amy’s character replies under her breath. She quickly says, “I’ve been a freaking wreck.”
Amy Schumer revealed that she was diagnosed with Cushing Syndrome in February 2024. According to Mayo Clinic, Cushing Syndrome happens when the body has too much of the hormone cortisol for a long time. This can result from the body making too much cortisol or having injections that help increase the count. She found out about the diagnosis while doing press for her Hulu show Life & Beth.
“I feel reborn,” Amy wrote in the News Not Noise newsletter. “While I was doing press on camera, I was also in MRI machines four hours at a time, having my veins shut down from the amount of blood drawn and thinking I may not be around to see my son grow up. So finding out I have the kind of Cushing that will just work itself out and I’m healthy was the greatest news imaginable.”
She attributed the help of trolls and doctors who were telling her that there was something wrong with her body. She told Alex Cooper on the Call Her Daddy podcast, “At first, I was like, ‘F—k off,’ Amy said. But then, she realized, “Wait, I have been getting steroid injections for my scars” from her breast reduction and Cesarean section after her baby’s birth.
“So I got these was getting these steroid injections and so it gave me this thing called Cushing syndrome—which I wouldn’t have known if the internet hadn’t come for me so hard,” she continued.
Amy Schumer got liposuction and plastic surgery with Dr. Jordan Tenner after she discovered she had endometriosis. She got her appendix and uterus taken out because of the pain as well. “She wanted to enter this new decade in life, you know, with confidence and really wanted to feel good about herself,” Terner told Good Morning America. “And in revealing this to everyone and standing up and saying I did this – don’t be ashamed. Do what makes you feel good because we all kind of need a pick me up.”
