The Sabrina Carpenter and Barry Keoghan drama is the gift that keeps on giving. And it’s giving on Valentine’s Day. The couple, who ended their relationship last December, only after a year of dating, have been in the news ever since the news broke, and not always for a good reason.
When PEOPLE reported that the two had ended their romantic relationship, there didn’t seem to be any drama, with an insider telling the outlet that “They are both young and career-focused, so they’ve decided to take a break.” However, the rumors that the split was less than amicable spread from the start—with one particular influencer even being identified as the woman Keoghan allegedly cheated with.

Neither Carpenter nor Keoghan confirmed any of the rumors, but considering so much of their romance played out on the spotlight, with Keoghan regularly leaving comments on Carpenter’s Instagram posts, attending Coachella to see her and even starring in her “Please Please Please” music video, it’s no surprise that their breakup got a lot of attention. And with Carpenter re-releasing “Please Please Please,” there was bound to be eyes on any possible reference to Keoghan.
But, did Sabrina Carpenter’s new “Please Please Please” music video shade her ex Barry Keoghan? Here’s everything you need to know.
Carpenter released a deluxe edition on her album “Short n’ Sweet” just in time for Valentine’s, and that included a country take on “Please Please Please.” The video featured country legend Dolly Parton, and yes, there was a not-so-subtle nod to Barry Keoghan in it.
In the original “Please Please Please” music video, which Keoghan starred in alongside Carpenter when the two were dating, we see a couple embark on a relationship right after the man is released from jail. When he returns to crime, however, we see the Carpenter’s character isn’t willing to put up with it. She handcuffs him to a chair and tapes his mouth shut before planting a kiss on his lips and leaving him in an empty warehouse.
The new music video sees Carpenter hitting the road on a truck alongside Parton as the two sing the song. Parton then hands Carpenter a shovel, and as the police chases them, we see a man handcuffed in the back of the truck and with his head covered, but wearing the exact same outfit Keoghan did in the original video. At the end of the video, Carpenter pulls over and shakes her head, as the man bangs on the truck.
And that’s not all, there’s also a lyric change, with Carpenter and Parton taking turns singing, “I beg you, don’t embarrass me, like the others,” a change from the original, “I beg you, don’t embarrass me, mother——.”
“Please Please Please” contains several references believed to be about Keoghan, including a line that says, “I heard that you’re an actor, so act like a stand-up guy.”
Carpenter shared a snippet of the music video on Instagram, with the caption, “Dolly and me singing in a pickup truck!!!!!!, I am so honored to have one of my biggest idols on a song that means so much to me. ‘Short n’ Sweet’ deluxe is out now! Go watch and listen!!!! Love you forever @dollyparton 🤍🦋.”
Alongside the duet with Parton, the deluxe edition of the album features four other songs: “Busy Woman,” “15 Minutes,” “Couldn’t Make It Any Harder” and “Bad Reviews.”
