Justin Bieber is a pretty big name in the music industry and the kind of artist who has been part of the general consciousness for a long time. Bieber, who was discovered in 2008, and released his first EP in 2009, was for a while the definition of a teen idol and is to this day one of the most successful music artists of all time. But all of this, of course, means Bieber has been in the eye of the spotlight since a young age.

And with that has come growing pains, and also relationships that have put Bieber in the news for different reasons. There’s his closeness with Diddy, who Bieber has distanced himself from since the rapper was accused of sexual abuse. There’s his famous on-and-off relationship with Selena Gomez, which ended years ago—Gomez is now engaged to former Bieber collaborator Benny Blanco. There’s his marriage to wife Hailey Bieber and the birth of their son. A lot of reasons for Bieber’s name to be out there outside of his music.

Lately, however, Bieber has been in the news for other reasons: his health. But what happened to Justin Bieber’s health? Is he okay? Here’s everything we know.

What happened to Justin Bieber’s health?

Rumors there was something wrong with Justin Bieber’s health started swirling after a couple of recent appearances by Bieber that saw him looking run down and hit a crescendo after a recent video posted by Bieber himself on Instagram showed him performing a rap on a plane, all while holding a bag of chips, shirtless, and surrounded by friends. “I like a fly guy, I fly high like a magpie, I go high like I’m that guy,” Bieber raps in the video, looking tired and without much inflection to his voice.

The video led to fans responding with worried messages that ranged from “Stop Justin. You are a new daddy,” to “This is so sad to see,” and “He’s desperate for help! Justin you are so loved!”

However, Biber’s rep released a statement to TMZ saying the question about Bieber’s health is “exhausting and pitiful and shows that despite the obvious truth, people are committed to keeping negative, salacious, harmful narratives alive.” Bieber’s rep also told TMZ that the last year has been “very transformative for him as he ended several close friendships and business relationships that no longer served him.”

TMZ also reported Bieber’s appearance can be explained by working late on his music and helping to take care of his son, Jack, who is 6 months old.

This isn’t the first time Bieber’s health has been scrutinized. In 2020, Bieber opened up about his Lyme disease diagnosis and fighting off chronic mono. “While a lot of people kept saying Justin Bieber looks like (expletive), on meth etc. they failed to realize I’ve been recently diagnosed with Lyme disease,” he wrote on Instagram, adding, “not only that but a serious case of chronic mono which affected my skin, brain function, energy, and overall health.” In 2023, he suffered from temporary facial paralysis due to Ramsay Hunt syndrome.

Bieber struggled with addiction in the past, and in 2021 he described his worst moments to GQ, sharing that his security guards would come into his room at night to check if he was alive. “There was a sense of still yearning for more,” he told the magazine. “It was like I had all this success and it was still like: I’m still sad, and I’m still in pain. And I still have these unresolved issues. And I thought all the success was going to make everything good. And so for me, the drugs were a numbing agent to just continue to get through.”

The singer has reportedly been sober for over a decade, and though he still drinks socially he’s said to have stopped using prescription pills and other strong substances.
