Inside William & Kate’s ‘Nightmare’ That Almost ‘Crushed’ Their Marriage
Kate Middleton has been out of the spotlight because of her cancer treatment for the past year. Prince William has kept up with his royal duties in the meantime, but the Princess of Wales’ hiatus might have taken a toll on the Royal couple’s stability.
In 2024, Kate Middleton quietly received cancer treatment and removed herself from public duties, while Prince William continued to do so. It was a tough time for the family and when Kate announced that she was in remission, she thanked the people who supported her every step of the way.

“My heartfelt thanks goes to all those who have quietly walked alongside William and me as we have navigated everything,” she wrote on Instagram in January 2025. “We couldn’t have asked for more. The care and advice we have received throughout my time as a patient has been exceptional.”
Since then, Kate Middleton has slowly but surely returned to serving her public duties alongside Prince William. But how has these tough times affected their marriage?

Despite the struggles and big news, Prince William and Kate Middleton are stronger than ever. Amanda Foreman told People, “There is a sense of protectiveness and partnership. The last five years have been a nightmare for them in every possible way — the past year even more so. That either crushes a marriage, or it brings them together.”
“And just in time, frankly — if there was ever a time when the country required stability, this is it,” she adds. “The international stage is so unstable, it is rather extraordinary to see how both have risen to the occasion.”
Recently, Kate made a strong comeback on March 17 to fulfill the annual tradition of handing out St. Patrick’s Day shamrocks to the Irish Guards, for which she serves as honorary colonel.
