Piper Rockelle, Tiffany Smith
Netflix

Netflix‘s newest documentary Bad Influence: The Dark Side of Kidfluencing is yet another account about the sinister things happening behind the scenes when it comes to child content creators. The documentary accounts for several teenagers who accused Piper Rockelle and her mother of abuse and harassment when they were working with her.

After getting millions of views on YouTube, Piper Rockelle and her mother Tiffany Smith helmed together a group of eleven tweens to live with them and to continuously make content. However, things weren’t as happy as they seemed on camera.

In 2020, eleven teenagers sued Rockwell and her mother filed a lawsuit complaining of exploitation and being “frequently subjected to an emotionally, physically and sometimes sexually abusive environment perpetrated by Piper’s mom.” They claimed that Tiffany Smith inflicted ongoing abuse such as shouting explicit comments, repeatedly touching the plaintiffs inappropriately, and encouraging them to be “sexy” and “sexually aggressive” in videos. The documentary also alleges that she made advances towards Rockelle’s former boyfriend.

Smith countersued for $30 million. Smith, Rockelle, and Hill denied the allegations raised in the docuseries and lawsuit and refused interview requests.

What is Piper Rockelle & Tiffany Smith’s relationship now?

Piper Rockelle still has a close relationship with her mother and still defends her to this day. She called the lawsuit “extremely painful and, honestly, hard to understand,” and said the claims against her family were “ridiculous.” While Piper still continues to post on her Instagram and TikTok, Tiffany Smith has her social media set to private.

“It’s been incredibly hard because the media and social media have been relentless and so hurtful without understanding or even trying to understand the truth,” the content creator said. “It’s become impossible to even look at my phone or do normal, day-to-day things. It’s been so incredibly painful. Thank goodness for my family. And thank goodness this is finally behind us.”

The lawsuit was settled out of court in 2024, with the 11 teens receiving $1.85 million. “This whole case is based on lies that are driven by financial jealousy,” Smith told the Los Angeles Times. “Financial jealousy of a 15-year-old girl.”

Piper also defended her actions and continued to double down on her former friends. “These people, they don’t love me,” she said of her former Squad members. “Because if they did love me, they wouldn’t be doing this.”
