Things between Prince Harry and his family have not been good for a while. Only a few weeks ago, Prince Harry himself told reporters they would “be shocked” to hear “what’s being held back” in the case about his security being withdrawn, adding that his “worst fears have been confirmed by the whole legal disclosure,” adding, “and that’s really sad.” There are reports that he and King Charles are not on speaking terms. And things between Prince Harry and his brother Prince William don’t seem to be any better.

First, there are the reports that, when William takes the throne, he is ready to strip Prince Harry and Meghan Markle of their titles. “It’s no secret William wants Harry more harshly dealt with. He thinks he has betrayed the family from top to bottom, which is the ultimate Windsor crime. It wouldn’t take much to provoke him to flex his muscles when he is king,” a palace insider told The Daily Beast.

Then there’s Prince William’s recent decision to hire the aide who accused Meghan Markle of bullying, a decision that was reportedly deliberate to make his brother mad. Jason Knauf was recently appointed as the CEO of his initiative, Earthshot Prize. And as Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams told Fox News, “Prince William’s decision to make Jason Knauf, the former private secretary of the Sussexes, the CEO of his most prestigious project will infuriate Harry and Meghan. It is impossible to avoid feeling that this is precisely what William intended.”

He continued, “As far as the Sussexes are concerned, [Knauf] undoubtedly has pariah status. William is clearly showing he doesn’t care about what his brother thinks, much less Meghan.… The royal rift seems permanent.” And the two brothers are reportedly not on speaking terms right now.

Let’s remember Knauf accused Meghan Markle of bullying, claiming she drove two personal assistants out of the household and undermined the confidence of a third staff member in 2018.

All of this comes after what feels like years of back-and-forth little jabs between the brothers. In his autobiography Spare, Prince Harry discussed their sometimes-contentious relationship, as is common between siblings. But during the promotion of it, he said about William and King Charles, “My father and my brother, they are trapped,” he told Oprah Winfrey. “They don’t get to leave and I have huge compassion for that.”

However, it seems like at this point, things might have turned around. A source who knows both brothers well told The Times that Harry leaving the monarchy hasn’t turned out like he expected it to and that he is now the one who is feeling like he claimed his brother and father were, all those years ago. “How ironic that Harry is the one that feels trapped. What does he do? He doesn’t seem to have any more idea of what to do with himself now than when he left.”

All of this is happening as plans are already being made for King Charles’ possible succession. “The people I’ve spoken to have said that the succession planning, as they call it, began even before Charles’ diagnosis,” royal author Tom Quinn told Harper’s Bazaar recently. “I mean, he’s the oldest Prince of Wales to become king in history, so succession planning had begun before Charles came to the throne simply because of the age issue.”

Can the brothers make up before time runs out?
