There’s no question that Prince William will be King. The only real doubt is when. And considering King Charles‘s cancer and the concerns about his health, preparations for the upcoming succession have already started. This comes as Prince William has stepped up his royal duties during his father’s illness. It all falls on William now, particularly since his brother, Prince Harry, stepped away from royal duties years ago, alongside his wife, Meghan Markle.

Reports lately have indicated this remains a point of contention for William, who is said not to be on speaking terms with his brother. Prince Harry’s relationship with King Charles is also strained at the moment. In fact, he even told reporters in regards to the case about his security being withdrawn that his “worst fears have been confirmed by the whole legal disclosure,” adding, “and that’s really sad.”

Whatever that means for Prince Harry’s willingness to make peace with his brother remains to be seen, but as for William, reports indicated he was ready to strip Prince Harry and Meghan Markle of their titles weeks ago. “It’s no secret William wants Harry more harshly dealt with. He thinks he has betrayed the family from top to bottom, which is the ultimate Windsor crime. It wouldn’t take much to provoke him to flex his muscles when he is king,” a palace insider told The Daily Beast then.

Now, the issue has come to the forefront once again after Meghan appeared on Jamie Kern Lima’s podcast. In a video published afterwards, a gift basket sent to the US cosmetics entrepreneur was shown, which included a card that read: “With the Compliments of HRH The Duchess of Sussex.”

When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped down as working royals the agreement was that they would stop using HRH, which stands for Her/His Royal Highness, despite the fact that the two still hold the titles. “The Sussexes will not use their HRH titles as they are no longer working members of the Royal Family,” a statement from Buckingham Palace at the time explained.

Sources told the BBC the couple never used the HRH title in a commercial or public setting, and that this use of the title was strictly private, and the gift was given more than a year ago. Those sources also confirmed the title has not been used to promote Meghan Markle’s As Ever products or her Netflix series.

However, Prince William is reportedly not happy with that. According to The Daily Beast, a former courtier says the original deal “made it clear they had agreed not to use the HRH titles at all, ever, in any capacity.”

They also added, “Charles might be happy to put up with this, but William won’t. He loathes and despises Harry and Meghan with every bone in his body, he believes they have betrayed everything the family stands for and the idea that they are using their royal status as a calling card will enrage him.”

On top of that, a friend of William’s also shared with the outlet that, “Charles has completely lost control. It’s apparent that Harry and Meghan have every intention of making his final years a misery, just as he feared they would. Meghan using her HRH exposes how weak and enfeebled he is. She knows he won’t do anything. There is no way King William will stand for this. The titles will simply be removed when he is king. A way will be found.”

What that way is remains to be seen, as the only precedent is divorce. But considering how angry Prince William seems to be, reports indicate he will look for a way once he takes over. For now, however, King Charles is still in charge so everything is on pause.
