Lizzo has always been an advocate for body positivity. Now she’s calling for body neutrality as she opens up about her year-and-a-half weight loss journey.
Lizzo started her weight loss journey (which she calls her “weight release journey”) in 2023. In an interview on the “On Purpose With Jay Shetty” podcast in April 2025, she shared that she began her “intentional weight release journey” about a year and a half before the interview.
“I think a lot of people see a fat person that way and immediately just assume everything they’re doing is to be thin,” she said. “I don’t ever want to be thin. Will my body fluctuate from this size? Will I get a little smaller depending on some of the choices I make or a little bigger, depending on some of the choices I make in my life? Yes, I’m used to fluctuating.”
Lizzo also denied she used Ozempic, an FDA-approved prescription medication for people with Type 2 diabetes that has also become popular for weight loss, in an Instagram post in September 2024. “When you finally get ozempic allegations after 5 months of weight training and calorie deficit,” she wrote over a video of Christoph Waltz’s character in Django Unchained saying, “It’s like a reward.” She captioned the post, ““oZeMpIc oR cOkE?” – a fan 😭😭😭😭.”
During an interview with The New York Times in March 2024, Lizzo revealed that her weight loss journey had “been methodical” and she was “losing weight very slowly.” She also told the magazine that her idea of body positivity has since “evolved into body neutrality.”

“I’m not going to lie and say I love my body every day,” she said. “The bottom line is, the way you feel about your body changes every single day. There are some days I adore my body, and others when I don’t feel completely positive.”
During her interview on the “On Purpose With Jay Shetty” podcast, Lizzo explained that her slow weight loss and lack of appearances in the public eye may be the reason people were surprised by her body changes when they did see her.
“My body has been changing very slowly, but I don’t think people were paying attention,” she said. “I would show different things like … my workouts or I’d show, like, what I eat in a day … But I think we got to remember, everybody not seeing your shit all the time.”
Lizzo continued, “Everybody’s not privy to what you’re going through. They’re not with you every day. So when I pop out on a red carpet or when a video suddenly goes viral and my body is different, it appears like it was overnight. It appears sudden.”
In January 2025, Lizzo revealed that she had reached her “weight release goal” in an Instagram post. “I did it. Today when I stepped on my scale, I reached my weight release goal. I haven’t seen this number since 2014! Let this be a reminder you can do anything you put your mind to. Time for new goals!” she captione a photo of her body with a screenshot of a weight-tracking app that read: “Congratulations! You’ve met your weight loss goals.” Another screenshot showed that she had reduced her BMI by 10.5 and her body fat by 16 percent.
