The Met Gala brings celebrities’ hottest looks to the forefront, and everyone online wants to see who attended. However, sometimes there’s an impostor among us, and one celebrity who always falls victim to AI deepfakes is Katy Perry.

Katy Perry hasn’t attended the Met Gala since 2022, but fans made sure to make her presence known even if she wasn’t physically there. Fans posted AI-generated pictures of her wearing a pinstripe suit with a blazer and a latex skirt on the blue carpet, which led fans to believe that she was actually there. To clear things up, Katy Perry posted an Instagram carousel of the looks and her mom reacting to the fake pictures. She captioned the post, “couldn’t make it to the MET, I’m on The Lifetimes Tour (see you in Houston tomorrow IRL‼️)P.s. this year I was actually with my mom so she’s safe from the bots but I’m praying for the rest of y’all.”

Last year, her mom fell for an AI post of her wearing an embellished gown on the Met Gala steps and reacted to it. “Ha Feather! Didn’t know you went to the Met,” she messaged the singer. “What a gorgeous gown. You look like the Rose Parade, you are your own float lol.”

The “ET” artist responded to her mom, “lol mom the AI got you too, BEWARE!”

The last time Katy Perry attended the Met Gala was three years ago when she wore an Oscar de la Renta lacy dress with over a sculptural white mini dress. She also attended the event in 2019 when she wore the campiest outfit for the theme: “Camp: Notes on Fashion” with a chandelier dress.

AI’s prevalence in media has been getting traction in the past couple of years with the help of OpenAI tech like ChatGPT. Just a couple of days before the Met Gala deepfake, President Donald Trump posted an AI-generated photo of himself as the Pope after Pope Francis died.
