In Netflix‘s new documentary A Deadly American Marriage, directors Jenny Popplewell and Jessica Burgess investigate the death of Jason Corbett, an Irishman who moved to America with his kids after he married an American, Molly Martens. The trial for the crime made headlines as his kids, Jack and Sarah, claimed to be manipulated by their adoptive mother into giving false statements.

Jason Corbett was found dead in his house after there was an altercation between his wife Molly Martens, and her father, ex FBI agent Thomas Martens. Thomas alleged that he saw Molly being strangled by her husband and used a baseball bat to disarm him. Molly then used a paving stone to hit Jason on the head. Molly Martens was released from prison on June 6, 2024. “After a nine-year battle for justice, we are deeply disappointed by the impending release of Tom and Molly Martens,” Jason’s family said in a statement.

In October 2024, the Irish Mirror confirmed that Molly would be supervised in Tennessee, where her father was staying. An email read by the publication stated that there has been an agreement between the North Carolina Section of Community Corrections and the State of Tennessee to approve the transfer of supervision of offender Molly Martens. “The remainder of this offender’s sentence will be served in the State of Tennessee.”

In light of the Netflix documentary, Molly’s brother talked to a local NBC affiliate station about the new impact of public perception. “I think that our family has experienced 10 years of this, and we’ve been able to, remarkably, weather the storm,” he said. “We’ve been able to continue living—my mom beat cancer. I’ve gotten a degree. My brother has had children, we have gotten married. So I think we’re a really strong family, and regardless of what comes out, we’ll continue to move on.”
