An infamous Royal anecdote is being rewritten. Years after it was reported that Kate Middleton had made Meghan Markle cry, new reports from Royal servants offer a new perspective.

In a 2021 bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, Meghan Markle dispelled rumors that she had made Kate cry. “It was a really hard week of the wedding,” she said to the former talk show host. “And she was upset about something, but she owned it, and she apologized. And she brought me flowers and a note, apologizing. And she did what I would do if I knew that I hurt someone, right, to just take accountability for it.”

She continued, “A few days before the wedding, she was upset about something pertaining—yes, the issue was correct—about flower-girl dresses, and it made me cry, and it really hurt my feelings.”

In November 2018, the Telegraph reported that Kate was “in tears” over a “stressful” wedding fitting for her daughter Princess Charlotte, who was a flower girl at Meghan and Harry’s nuptials. The Telegraph reported at the time that Meghan wanted the “very best” for her wedding, and when the fitting didn’t go as planned, she became frustrated, which led Kate to become upset. The insider also noted that Kate’s reaction could’ve been from stress, as she had only given birth to her son, Prince Louis, couple weeks earlier. “Kate had only just given birth to her third child, Prince Louis, and was feeling quite emotional,” the source said.

An anonymous Royal staffer told Tom Quinn in his book Yes, Ma’am: The Secret Life of Royal Servants that both parties were hurt in the process. “Whenever this sort of thing happens in the royal family, traditionally no one says anything publicly about it, so it rarely reaches the media, but on this occasion, all sorts of other grievances meant that what was really nothing but a storm in a teacup reached the media and became a big issue. I can tell you that all the papers and commentators got this wrong, the truth is that as with many of these spats between sisters, brothers or even sisters-in-law, both sides were really upset.”

“The truth is that during the discussions about the bridesmaid’s dress Meghan said a few things she regretted and Kate said a few things she later regretted, but it was all in the heat of the moment,” the staff member continued. “Both women were crying their eyes out!”

Meghan and Harry approached Kate and William about the matter soon after it made headlines. Harry recounted in his memoir Spare, “Kate got things rolling straightaway by acknowledging that these stories in the papers about Meg making her cry were totally false. ‘I know, Meghan, that I was the one who made you cry.'”

“I sighed. Excellent start, I thought. Meg appreciated the apology, but wanted to know why the papers had said this, and what was being done to correct them?”

The royal insider also said that the media had blown it all out of proportion. “Whenever this sort of thing happens in the royal family, traditionally no one says anything publicly about it, so it rarely reaches the media, but on this occasion all sorts of other grievances meant that what was really nothing but a storm in a teacup reached the media and became a big issue. The other thing people forget is that when a private royal argument or row reaches the media, it gets subtly altered and usually made more significant than it really is.”

They continued, “But even the royals tend to believe what they read in the newspapers if it suits them, so the incident with the bridesmaid’s dress became a kind of marker for all the other problems that Meghan had with Kate and with William and other members of the family.”

The account also comes shortly after Harry expressed that he wants reconciliation with his estranged family. “I would love reconciliation with my family,” Harry confessed in the interview. There’s no point in continuing to fight anymore.”

However, sources close to William say that making up with his brother is never in the cards. “William doesn’t talk about Harry anymore,” a royal source told Us Weekly. “Everyone knows it’s a subject that they shouldn’t bring up, so he hasn’t brought up the interview and won’t.”

“It’s no secret William wants Harry more harshly dealt with. He thinks he has betrayed the family from top to bottom, which is the ultimate Windsor crime. It wouldn’t take much to provoke him to flex his muscles when he is king,” a palace insider told The Daily Beast.
