Prince William has a lot of experience with grief. The Prince of Wales spoke about his mother, Princess Diana, in a poignant speech for a charity that he holds close to his heart.
“Grief is the very worst pain any child or parent will ever endure, and while we cannot prevent these losses, we can ensure that every possible type of expert support and care is given, to help rebuild the lives of those affected,” the heir said at the 30th anniversary dinner for Child Bereavement UK at Windsor Castle. “In my 16 years as patron of Child Bereavement UK, I have seen the life-changing impact of their work and how the support, care and compassion provided protects the long-term health and wellbeing of those living with loss.
“I have also seen the growing need for support of this kind, and it is because of this increasing demand that I am delighted that Child Bereavement UK and Winston’s Wish are joining forces to expand their impact,” he continued. “They have recognised that together they can do so much more, and I commend them both for taking this bold step to reach more people and help to reduce the long-term challenges that unresolved grief can cause.”

Princess Diana’s longtime friend Julia Samuel founded the organization in 1994, and is godfather to Prince George. Diana died in a car crash in 1997 when Prince William was 15 years old and when Prince Harry was 12 years old. Samuel is also very close with the Duke of Sussex. William serves as a patron of her organization. When he joined, he promised that he wanted to “continue my mother’s commitment to a charity which is very dear to me. What my mother recognised back then – and what I understand now – is that grief is the most painful experience that any child or parent can endure.’
When 17-year-old Rebecca told the Prince how she lost her father. He offered the advice, “Sometimes the hardest thing about grief is finding the words for how you actually feel.”
Fast forward nearly 3 decades later, Prince William and Harry are undergoing a major rift. Harry lost his security appeal on Friday, May 3, and talked to the BBC about how he would like to talk to his family again. However, William has other plans in regards to his brother. “William doesn’t talk about Harry anymore,” a royal source told Us Weekly. “Everyone knows it’s a subject that they shouldn’t bring up, so he hasn’t brought up the interview and won’t.”
Other reports note that William would have like to cut out Harry quicker. “William would have cut Harry and Meghan off from the royal institution back then, and he regrets that it didn’t happen,” the confidant added.
“William has lost all his patience when it comes to Harry and Meghan. He refuses to get into a public back-and-forth with his brother about any of this,” the insider continued. “It’s getting old at this point. He feels that Harry made his decision to walk away, and he should abide by the consequences that come with that.”
Prince Harry recently mentioned Princess Diana in a response to his security detailing saying that, “My hands are tied in seeking legal recourse against the establishment. This all comes from the same institutions that preyed upon my mother, that openly campaigned for the removal of our security, and that continue to incite hatred towards me, my wife [Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex], and even our children, while at the same time protecting the very power that they should be holding accountable.”
