The reports about Meghan Markle have swirled since she and Prince Harry first announced their engagement, and depending on who you believe, it’s all either an attempt to besmirch her character or totally factual. Either way, the media has jumped on every negative report to the point that it’s sometimes hard to parse out what really happened or who is really feuding with whom.

And that’s complicated when it comes to the British Royal Family, particularly at a time where it seems like every day there’s also speculation about the state of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s marriage, not to mention concerns about Prince Harry’s relationship with his father, King Charlesand his brother, Prince William.

Now, new reports indicate that Meghan Markle “berated” one of her wedding caterers so badly that the late Queen Elizabeth II had to intervene, according to royal biographer Katie Nicholl.

“On one occasion in the run-up to the wedding, Meghan went to Windsor Castle for a menu-tasting and ended up having a tense exchange with a member of staff,” Nicholl claimed in her book The New Royalsper the Daily Mail. “Meghan was at the castle to taste some of the dishes, and told one of the caterers she could taste egg,” a source told Nichols.

The story goes that Markle got upset because “the dish was meant to be vegan and macrobiotic.” The incident reportedly got back to the Queen, who intervened. “Suddenly the Queen walked in and said: ‘Meghan, in this family we don’t speak to people like that,’” the source claimed.

British journalist Tom Quinn claimed Markle had earned the nickname “Duchess of Difficult” before she and Prince Harry stepped away from their royal duties. “She could be difficult because she was finding life difficult — trying to feel her way and work out the intricacies of a positively medieval, labyrinthine system,” an anonymous palace staff reportedly told Quinn.

Markle has also had to deal with accusations of bullying the staff before. The new reports don’t paint her in the same light, but are also not totally favorable, with the insider claiming she was called “Mystic Meg” because of her “new agey” views, which were considered “so woke.”

“Through absolutely no fault of her own, Meghan wasn’t always great with her staff — she just wasn’t used to it as Harry was,” the source continued. “One minute she would be really friendly, perhaps overfriendly, hugging staff and trying to make friends with them, and the next she would be irritated by the fact they wouldn’t respond instantly at all times of the day and night.”

Recently, there have been new reports about Markle’s relationship with Kate Middleton, as well. The reports specifically reference an incident between the two where it was reported that Markle made Middleton cry. An anonymous Royal staffer told Tom Quinn for his book Yes, Ma’am: The Secret Life of Royal Servants that the media blew the situation out of proportion. “Whenever this sort of thing happens in the royal family, traditionally no one says anything publicly about it, so it rarely reaches the media, but on this occasion, all sorts of other grievances meant that what was really nothing but a storm in a teacup reached the media and became a big issue. I can tell you that all the papers and commentators got this wrong, the truth is that as with many of these spats between sisters, brothers or even sisters-in-law, both sides were really upset.”
