A wedding dress is a very important thing, and in many ways, a very personal thing. Not everyone’s tastes are the same, and what we all envision on that special day is different for all. For celebrities, there’s also the added pressure of the fact that they will have to release a picture for public consumption, and they want to look good. They also want the dress to reflect who they are.
Demi Lovato married Jordan “Jutes” Lutes over the weekend, and their wedding dress, an off-the-shoulder corseted gown from Vivienne Westwood, made them look amazing. In fact, people couldn’t stop talking about the dress, also a very common thing when it comes to celebrities. But then, people noticed the similarities between Demi Lovato’s dress and another celebrity’s wedding dress. So the conversation shifted to that.

But is it the same dress? Did Demi Lovato steal Miley Cyrus’ wedding dress? Here’s the answer.
The answer is no, no matter how you want to look at it. Though the dress Cyrus wore to marry Liam Hemsworth looks very similar to the one Lovato wore to their recent wedding, the two are not the same. This simply seems to be a case of two similar silhouettes and a dress a lot of people are finding pretty enough to fixate on.
In 2018, People reported that Cyrus’s dress was made-to-order and retailed for $8,600. Lovato’s dress, meanwhile, was custom-made for them by Vivienne Westwood, with the singer having a lot of say in the process of what the dress ended up looking like.
“When I was thinking about what dress style I wanted, I often found myself coming back to Vivienne’s designs—specifically how the silhouettes really complement the curves of your body and her use of corsets,” Lovato told Vogue, explaining how an already-existing gown served as the foundation and, “We were not only able to work off that [initial] inspiration, but we added touches that really make this dress so special to me. I love everything about the dress.”
Not just that, the process, which Lovato was very much involved in, included “mixing and matching top and skirt options” and “honing in on each element” of the design. So, the final design of the dress, even though it might look similar to others, is very much something only Lovato has worn.
That isn’t to say the confusion is not understandable. Lovato might have chosen the different elements herself, but the silhouette of the dress is very classic and therefore, something a lot of women, celebrities or not, have worn before. But no, Demi Lovato did not steal Miley Cyrus’ wedding dress, and considering how Cyrus’ marriage ended, that’s probably a good omen for what’s ahead for Lovato in their marriage.
