The feud between Prince Harry and his father, King Charles, has been at the top of the list of troubling reports coming from the British Royal Family in the last few months. And that’s saying something, because there have been reports about a possible divorce from both Prince William and Kate Middleton and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. But the fact that Prince Harry remains estranged not just from his father, but from his brother Prince William, has taken most of the spotlight.
Now there are reports that Prince Harry almost took the feud to another level, reportedly at one point considering changing his last name to his mother’s maiden surname, Spencer, presumably to permanently cut ties with his father. There’s no biggest separation that the decision to not even share a last name.

The Telegraph reports that “During a rare visit to Britain, Prince Harry is said to have sought advice from his uncle Earl Spencer, about whether to assume his mother’s surname.” A source told the paper, “They had a very amicable conversation and Spencer advised him against taking such a step.”
Taking Princess Diana’s Spencer surname would have meant getting rid of Mountbatten-Windsor, a last name Prince Harry shares with his two children, six-year-old Prince Archie and three-year-old Princess Lilibet.
Despite that being the name in their legal documentation, however, Meghan Markle revealed in the Netflix series With Love, Meghan that their family uses “Sussex” as their last name. “It’s so funny you keep saying Meghan Markle. You know I’m Sussex now?” she tells Mindy Kaling at one point. “You have kids, and you go, ‘No, I share my name with my children,’ and that feels so—I didn’t know how meaningful it would be to me, but it just means so much to go, ‘This is our family name. Our little family name.’”
Perhaps this is why Prince Harry had no issues considering the change.
Things seemed to have taken a positive turn recently, though. Prince Harry’s latest interview suggested he wanted to make up with his father while there was still time. All of this comes amid worrying reports about King Charles’ health.
”Charles is indeed a sick man, and he does have cancer,” an insider told NewsNationNow. “He also refused chemotherapy and decided on a less invasive treatment. While Harry and his dad aren’t speaking, Harry would be aware of all of this via back channels.”
A possible reconciliation with King Charles is considered more likely than a reconciliation with his brother, Prince William. Reports have indicated that William has plans for Prince Harry when he takes the throne, which might include taking away his title.
“It’s no secret William wants Harry more harshly dealt with. He thinks he has betrayed the family from top to bottom, which is the ultimate Windsor crime. It wouldn’t take much to provoke him to flex his muscles when he is king,” a palace insider told The Daily Beast.
At least Prince Harry didn’t take that final step of changing his last name. But whether this means things can still be fixed remains to be seen.
