There’s no question Prince William and Prince Harry resemble their mother, Princess Diana, a lot. And yet, so many years after the death of the beloved Princess, it’s easy to see them as two separate individuals and to focus on the day-to-day stories coming out of the royal family. This is particularly true at a time when King Charles is reportedly very sick with cancer, he and his son Prince Harry are not getting along, and Prince Harry and his brother Prince William are also not on speaking terms.
But now, with succession plans reportedly underway already, there’s a lot of attention being paid specifically to Prince William and what kind of King he will be. In June 1982, just after the birth of Prince William, Princess Diana told a royal reporter that the nation was “lucky” to have him. And it seems she might have been right.

In an interview with the Mirror UK, Jennie Bond, former BBC Royal Correspondent, said: “As Diana once said to me: ‘William’s alright. The country is very lucky to have William.’ I think she was bang on.” But that’s not all, Bond explained her reasoning, saying, “Clearly, William is doing something very right. His informal, approachable way of going about his work is resonating with the public.”
Bong also added, “Even the way he talks is different to previous generations. He’s well spoken, of course, but not overly posh. He dresses well, of course, but is quite often wearing jeans and trainers. He’ll pose for selfies with the crowds, he’ll even work the camera for them if they get flustered! All this adds up to a prince and future King who seems reasonably in touch – despite his privileged status.”
For a royal family that has often been criticized for being out of touch, this is a great look, and proof that perhaps William’s resemblance to his mother goes beyond his features. And it’s being reflected in the numbers. A recent YouGov poll has pointed to William as the most beloved royal, but that’s not all. The poll also showed that a large number of people, approximately 75% of respondents, hold a positive view of the future king. A lot of this is believed to be about William’s openness about doing things differently and modernizing the monarchy. Meanwhile, the future Queen, Kate Middleton, has a 72% approval.
Last year, Prince William spoke about trying to modernize the British Royal family, saying, “I can only describe what I’m trying to do and that’s trying to do it differently and I’m trying to do it for my generation. I’m doing it with maybe a smaller r in the royal.”
William also recently took steps to separate himself from his father, reportedly switching lawyers, from Harbottle & Lewis and its partner, Gerrard Tyrrell—the same lawyers his father used—to Mishcon de Reya, which represented Princess Diana in her divorce from Charles.
”William wanted to strike out on his own,” a source told the Daily Mail about it. “He did not want to continue using his father’s lawyers. It’s as simple as that. He wants to be his own man.”
And it seems that includes being a different kind of king.
