Jeff Bezos may be one of the richest men in the world, but he can definitely spend a little bit of his wealth on love. The Amazon founder just spent a lavish weekend celebrating his wedding with former journalist Lauren Sánchez, but he made a shocking financial decision right before their nuptials.
The former journalist and the billionaire tied the knot in a very controversial wedding in Venice, Italy. It’s reported that the couple spent $55 million to fund the wedding, which in total is about $55,000 per guest. The wedding was met with criticism from Venetian residents who actively boycotted the event where A-listers like Kim Kardashian, Orlando Bloom, and Oprah Winfrey attended.

In a Vogue interview, Bezos revealed how Sánchez “She has really helped me put more energy into my relationships,” he says. “She’s always encouraging me: ‘Call your kids. Call your dad. Call your mom.’ And she’s also just a very good role model. She keeps in touch with people. I’ve never seen her put makeup on without calling somebody. Usually her sister.”
Jeff Bezos’ net worth is reportedly $237 billion according to Forbes. From humble beginnings, he started Amazon in his Seattle garage, and over the years, the company became the leading e-commerce company.
In 2021, Bezos stepped down from his position as CEO to become the executive chairman and focus on his other ventures like Blue Origin. In September 2024, it was reported that he owned 976 million shares of the company that’s worth around $5 million. The billionaire reportedly liquidates one billion Amazon shares per year to fund Blue Origin.
After his wedding to Lauren Sánchez, it was reported that Bezos had sold 3.3 million shares for $736.7 million, according to a regulatory filing.
The billionaire revealed that he aims to give up some of his wealth throughout his life. “The hard part is figuring out how to do it in a levered way,” he said about his strategy to CNN. “It’s not easy. Building Amazon was not easy. It took a lot of hard work, a bunch of very smart teammates, hard-working teammates, and I’m finding — and I think Lauren is finding the same thing — that charity, philanthropy, is very similar.”
Some of this wealth will be going to the Bezos Earth Fund, where he commits to giving roughly 8% of his current net worth, around $10 billion over a decade.
Lauren Sánchez’s net worth is reportedly $30 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth. She receives most of her income through her career as a news anchor and entrepreneur.
Sánchez also serves as the vice chair of the Bezos Earth Fund. “We really want to do the most we can with the dollars that we put into things,” Sánchez told Vogue. “It’s not about just giving the money away. It’s about being involved.”
Page Six reported that Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez had signed an iron-clad prenup before their wedding extravaganza in Venice, Italy. “They can get married anywhere as their prenup would generally be drafted to include its enforceability everywhere,” a source told the site.
The couple lives in Florida, which means they would have to get a divorce in the state if they choose to do so in the future. “Divorce can only happen in the state of the primary residence,” the insider said. “So if they live in Florida, no matter where they marry or what the prenup says, they would have to divorce in Florida.”
Bezos did not have a pre-nup with his ex-wife, MacKenzie Scott. She received $38 billion in Amazon stock following their 2019 divorce, making her a 4 percent stakeholder in the company. Scott had spent about $18 billion on investing in charities.
